A beautiful Oriental Fan - hand pieced quilt. It’s another wall hanging.

Your home must be very colourful with all your beautiful wall hangings Janet.

This quilt has a lovely story. Janet made this quilt for her daughter, the fabric is from the dress she wore for her brothers wedding its a liberty fabric (2005) Snowball pattern, what a great idea.

Janet's Trunk Show - Part 1

The first part of Janet's trunk show featuring her wonderful quilts, thanks to Debby for pics and words.

Thank you Janet for sharing your gorgeous quilts with us, we had another interesting Trunk Show hearing your quilt stories.
Janet stumbled on quilting accidentally in 1997 & started with this sampler quilt to learn the techniques - all hand stitched & pieced.

Janet then got the bug & bought a sewing machine (good thinking!)
Her next quilt was a Dresden Plate kit using an earthy palet. Machine pieced in 1998

There was lots of left over fabric from the Dresden Plate kit so Janet created this quilt using the 'quilt as you go' method in a half square triangle pattern.

Janet and her Darling took to the ocean waves in their yacht for 18 months, space was a problem but Janet made sure there was some quilting supplies on board, she created this lovely quilt.

Janet was involved in a friendship block swap with 23 other gals and wanting to make a quilt hit on this great idea of adding extra blocks, the original friendship blocks have the white centers and coloured outer edges, while the additional blocks have a coloured center and a white border.

Janet had a Japanese Phase as you do!! It is circles, hand pieced & hand quilted using beautiful Japanese fabrics.

Janet made this very cosy flannel lap quilt for her mother in England.

Janice Trunk Show

Janice started the evening with a few of her favouritetreasures, all with lovely stories.

The sewing basket was given to Janice and her twin sister toshare as children, Janice recently unearthed it and as she is the sewer guesswho keeps it now!!

This is amazing Janice! It’s a photo taken with her twin sister Nancy meeting Princess Alexandra when she visited Nambourin 1959. Janice is the shy one. How cute.

The ceramic bunny rabbit filled with bath salts was given toher grandma when Janice was 6 or 7 & she just loved it. When her grandma passed Janice was given thebunny so it holds happy memories.

Janice made this quilt in 2000 for her parentsGolden Wedding Anniversary, her Mum just loves it & Janicehad to nearly beg her Mum to take it off her bed so Janice couldshare it with us!!

Janice made this quilt for her sisters Silver WeddingAnniversary but the sad thing is that Sis has never used it. I'd takeit back! Its a nine patch and snowball design.

Here is a gorgeous Heart Colour wash quilt. Ilove this one, must do a class one day!-D

This quilt was 4th favourite at the Buderium 2009 QuiltShow. Colour wash in Purples "Spiral Dance"

Don't bug me quilt. Very cute.

Batik quilt- just gorgeous Janice. Hand stitched, reverse appliqué.

Janice used the circle cut-outs from the above quilt to create this wall hanging, recutting the circles to true, stitching them to a fabric square and then recutting into 4 to swap around and again restitch. Very clever.

A Story of Love and Caring.

Janice was visiting with a friend suffering terminal breastcancer, the friend complained to her Darling of being very cold and requestedhe get ‘one of those camp sleeping bags’ to keep her warm….well, the bag was abit dusty and a bit ratty – as camping bags usually are. Janice was inspired to make her friend a quilt with fabricsshowing all the farming things that she loved so much, including growingRaspberries and Strawberries. The onlyfabric Janice couldn’t source was one with Strawberries so she included someappliquéd strawberries in the quilt. Her friend loved the quilt and it was returned to Janice at the end.

At a show and tell another of Janice’s friends, a lady wellon in years fell in love with the quilt and Janice gifted it to her to use whensitting in her cane chair, where it is still used to this day.

Janice tells the story of how her friends sufferinginspired her to insist on a biopsy on a breast lump that Janice had had forsome time, always having the lump dismissed, as ‘oh that’s nothing’. The biopsy showed cancer and Janice waswhisked off for some radical treatment, so saving her life for which Janicewill always be very grateful to her friends memory.

This is a very well used and much loved countrynine patch quilt which Janice made for her daughter, after she so admired the above quilt made for Janices friend, and as so often happens with a loved and used quilt, this one has faded a little in our harsh Queensland sun.

June's Trunk Show - Part 3

The last of June's Trunk Show with thanks to Debby and the Thursday night girls for the pics and words.

Strip style round robin quilt done with fellow quilters from the Buderim Patchwork group

June did quite a few variations of 'Hidden Wells' quilts, after making the first one 'the correct' way and then changing things around for her own take on the design. She then took workshops for both the Thursday night Girls and the Wednesday afternoon girls to teach us all the tricks.

The two last pics are front and back of the same quilt.

June made this quilt for her grandsons 16th birthday. She used African fabrics.

Love this quilt June. She won first prize at our quilt show 4 years ago. It's a block of the month, log cabin with applique and June designed the outer border.

June's Trunk Show - Part 2

Finally, and in time for your Christmas Break enjoyment we have the second part of June's Trunk Show, courtesy of Debby and the Thursday night girls.

Two Stack and Slash quilts.
One an Attic Windows - love the colours

and the second, a Stack and Slash quilt with a difference.

Two special quilts for family members, first is one for June's great grandchild and the second is for June's daughter Joanne, for one of those big '0' birthdays that come along.

Pinwheel tessellations, made in a workshop.

Rabbits in Hearts, claimed by June's son for his own.

Two 'Red Hat Ladies' quilts, the first made for Junes Sister-in Law, again for one of those big'0' birthdays and the second one with June's layout variations.

This was a bring your money Thimbleberry Mystery Workshop at Foster N.S.W., where the organisers were presented you with a bag of fabric.

June entered an Australia wide Phaff competion and although she didn't win she has a certificate hanging proudly in her sewing room. We saw the pillow sham that goes with this gorgeous quilt in Part 1.

A 90's Double Irish Chain which June has hand quilted. June did this at a workshop in Tassie.

Another two quilts June has done in workshops, the first a scrappy quilt done on point and the second a Spiders Webb. June scattered applique roses amongst the spiders webs to go with the rose border.

Denise Trunk Show

After such a long break, we are back with some great works from the talented ladies of the Buderim Patchwork Group, and to start us off, here, courtesy of Debby and the Thursday Night girls is another Trunk Show, this one featuring the wonderful work of Denise.

Denise has lived in Papua New Guinea and also in South Africa. She had lots of family photos at her trunk show including a few of her sons on their graduation nights & she actually made their formal suits. That was a huge job. Well done.
We also saw photos of her in costumes when she performed as an opera singer, we might get Denise to sing us a song on our next Trunk Show and Tell.

Denise is holding up a pair of cute hot pants which she made with a matching long jacket that she wore on her wedding day in SA. A beautiful bride she was too. It is their 40th Anniversary this year.... CONGRATULATIONS.

Meet Chewbacca Bear, isn’t he adorable?

Denise is a wonderful & clever embroiderer, below is some of her work, Here she has done Elizabethan embroidery in the framed heart, Gold Stumpwork to create the gorgeous seahorse

and beautiful beaded and embroidered frog in the bulrushes and a dragonfly.

This was Denise's 1st sampler quilt done in Greens & purples

I think she likes purple! Here is another purple sampler, 'Spring Flowers' learnt at Spotlight when Denise & family were living in Townsville. All hand quilted.

A small sampler of Autumn Blooms. Denise has only finished this recently. Love the way you placed your doilies, you did a lovely job Denise.

June's Trunk Show and Tell

Another Trunk Show from the Thursday night group. Courtesy of Letitia and Debby.

June shared lots of her beloved creations with us last month. June taught sewing and as you will see has experimented with many different crafts.
Gollywogs and Bears..too georgeous, Gollys dressed in outfits that June made for them.

June has been making her own lace for many years and has collected and made beautiful beaded ends for her lace bobbins, she has made all the cases as well.

June made this christening dress and made the lace as well. It is magnificent. What a beautiful Heirloom.

Using hexies and lots of Crazy Patch, June made this pillow and sham for her bed, aptly named 'Under the Sea'. Gorgeous colours.

June made 3 Gollywog quilts for her Grandchildren...

... and another beauty.

A tulip table runner made at a workshop held at the Cottage a couple of years back, showing an easier curved piecing method.

June went into a Phaff competition to advertise their sewing machines. The exhibition was displayed Australia wide at Universities and shopping centers. June has a certificate proudly hanging in her sewing room to commemorate this wonderful piece. The butterfly comes off the pillow and the quilting is gorgeous.

At another Cottage workshop, this one with Cottage member Pam, June created this whimsical Elf.

Monsters and Jellyfish...

...were just a couple of the goodies to feast our eyes on yesterday, but the 1st cab off the rank in the amusing department was Fran....yep Fran did the morning tea for the Needlework ladies and of course she just had to dress for the part, including a beautiful Tiara that she must have borrowed from a friend in England, it was just so stunningly beautiful, although there was a rumor running around that it was plastic from Cheapie Charlies, but we will just ignore that rumor.

Val created this 'Construction' quilt for her 6 year old Great Grandson for his Birthday.
The roads were Lorraine's idea to make it more authentic.

Another one of Lyn's bed cushions for her Grandies, this is cushion number 5, there is only one little grandie to yet have a birthday and then Lyn will be looking around for another idea for pressies.

Lyn has based all her Birthday cushions on a pattern from Kellie Wulfsohn from 'Don't Look Now'.

Lorraine has been away on 'Retreat' and as she usually does, came home with some lovely creations, this first was designed by Lorraine for a special lass in her life, as Lorraine tells the story..
"Jazmin is my very first Great Niece and I felt all gooey when she was born and made her a luvverly Sunbonnet Sue and friends quilt. It has been well worn and hopefully loved. A couple of weeks ago at another niece’s baby shower she told me her quilt had been lost, along with quite a few other things but that didn’t interest Jazzie, when the family moved back from WA. She asked if I could make her another one.

As she is nine now I thought Sue was a bit young for her so her current passion is the ocean and not wanting to make something as twee as a dolphin I had some left over crystal organza and it instantly shouted jelly fish. Lots of ribbons and silky shiny embroidery thread for quilting and she will soon have her own jellyfish. I know the organza won’t stand up to much wear and tear but, hey, it is for a kid anyway and if it wears out, well I’m happy cos it has been loved.

By the time this one wears out she will be a teenager and something more sophisticated will be needed."

The group project was this great travel bag, of course we are all envious and want to know all about the pattern and where to get our own.

Erk....I was so focused on getting a great pic I chopped of Lorraines head....... sorry Lainey.

Talking of heads, what were Marcia and Marguerite up to? apart from lots of giggling that is

Marguerite was showing Marcia how to crochet her little squares together,

so that they sit nice and flat!

Gwen had some goodies to share with us, firstly a lovely Scots themed table runner, thistles with a tartan border. Gwen saw a photo in a magazine and just loved the runner, she didn't have a pattern and just 'played it by ear'.

Ladybug Pincushions, bags and other wonderful work

A little while back the Thursday night gals had a workshop sewing ladybug pincushions. Lots of fun and laughter and lots of lovely pincushions, all bought to you courtesy of Debby and Letitia.

Letitia started the evening off with instructions, the girls were soon hard at it with finished ladybugs soon completed, along with Denise making sure she had the instructions all written down.

June, pleased with her little bug, gave his tail a tickle.

Time for a coffee break and then on to the flower bases, well a bug has to have a flower doesn't she?

Thank you so much Di for making and donating this fabulous 'Toytime' Quilt to STEMM for their Christmas in July. They made over $2,000.00.
Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

A few weeks back Maree bought this amazing wall hanging in to share with the group.
One of the families homes has a lot of old style fireplaces that are no longer used, thanks to the wonders of modern heating, and so a request was made for something to hang in front of a fireplace. Maree came up with this beauty.

Janet and Ann took part in a workshop with Jenny at the Angel last week and created these handy dandy zippered bags, lots of uses as the sizing can easily be changed.

I joind in a group of 7 members, the rows were made with myself starting and then passed around to the others to make their version of a specified block type.
Only the first and last rows were makers choice.
I was very pleased with the contributions of the other members. I joind them all up and completed the quilt finally in 2010
The inspiration was from Sue Andrew who organised it all. It is a very nice friendship quilt for me to treasure.

Marlene's grand daughter said these aren't stars, these are fireworks. Marlene has paper pieced it.

Another of June's fun nights. Windmills, Marlene has used 2 colours only and it is very effective.

This magnificent Baltimore quilt took Marlene 13 years in the making and Fiona has recently quilted it for her. Wow, and now it is finished. This quilt must have taken you hours and hours Marlene. It's fabulous.

And as all pet loving quilters do, Maureen has made a quilt for her dog, Missy, a sweet little Golden Pomeranian. Missy had a little playmate next door, a King Charles Spaniel, so how could Maureen pass up this great fabric.

Maureen, Marlene's daughter organised the girls from her Bli Bli group to embroider this lovely cloth for Marlene for her big -0- something birthday!! Marlene has some lovely
friends. Lucky girl. You can never have too many girlfriends.

How cute is this, challenged to pretty up a Lyncraft bag Marleen used some simple embroidery and buttons from her Mum's collection to come up with this creation.

Table Runners, one of which is pieced. Marlene made some funy noises when she said that word "pieced"..got the impression "piecing" isn't her cup of tea!!

After much delay, for which I do apologise, we finally have Marlene's Trunk Show for your enjoyment.

Marlene amazed us with all her quilts. She has made so many for family & friends & many more that she has given away over the short years she has been quilting. Thank you Marlene for sharing your beautiful creations with us. We had a great night.

Marlene began patchwork in 1988 at Waverley, Victoria.

This gorgeous Wedding Ring quilt was her 2nd quilt she made. Marlene made it for her daughter Maureen, again hand quilted, the colours have faded over the years but just lovely.

Marlene has made five of these Xmas quilt. She made one & everyone wants one!! She is a good mum.

Quilt Discussions and some Lovely Gifts

Remember Marguerite and this block from just a couple of weeks ago?

Well, be impressed, yesterday Marguerite bought the finished flimsy in for some input on borders from her fellow quilters

All beautifully hand appliqued, Marguerite did mention (lots) that her needle finger was "just a tad sore!"

Julie shared this 'I Spy' variation with us, its a gift for her Grand Nephew who is shortly moving into his first bed.

Julie machine quilted her quilt using a wandering stich in a cross hatch pattern through the quilt and into the borders.

Beryl is working on her 'hexies', all with a lemon or yellow center on a variety of different beige/cream backgrounds. As Beryl said, with a variety of backgrounds it then doesn't matter if you get totally involved and your little collection of hexies becomes a large collection of hexies, and she is certainly on her way to large with over 120 blocks done so far.

Marcia had some lovely gifts from her talented Daughter Leanne to share.

..came to visit us, bringing along a feast of Show and Tell of some of the wonderful quilts and rugs that they have made for their selected charity 'Laurel House', a refuge for sexually abused children on the Sunshine Coast.

Val, who formed the Hibiscus Quilters a few years back, told us that to date they have made 464 Quilts and rugs, 328 Bags, 240 Toys, stuffed, knitted, etc, 67 Worry Bags and 121 Hand Towels and Washers. Plus they have raised $500 from raffles.
What a great job, so with thanks to Lorraine for the pics, here are the quilts the group were treated to.

Colour Streams Kit Raffle

First visit back to the group yesterday and what a delight! really missed the fun while I was away, not to mention the wonderful arvo teas...but more on that later.
The Cottage runs a 'Winter School' each year where we invite tutors from various crafts to hold classes that all are welcome to be a part of. This year one of the tutors was the very talented Robyn Alexander of Colour Streams and as a 'Thank You' Robyn donated one of her fabulous kits to the Cottage to use as we desired. Well how do you share that out....brilliant idea. Raffle it!!, so the Cottage members are all invited to buy a ticket and hopefully win this wonderful kit.

Thank You Robyn for this great opportunity.

Marguerite has been inspired by the quilt show to finish her version of the Garden Quilt. Some of the girls started this as a friendship quilt last year, with some even making it into the Quilt Show! The push is on for those unfinished quilts to make it into an exhibition later on in the year!!

We often have a 'Buy' Table, donated curtain leftovers, and bits from the odd stash here and there, sometimes one wonders just what to do with a little piece of fabric, well Sue has solved the problem... make a bag.
This cutie has a top zip closure, inside pockets and Sue has used thick cording to make the handle rings.

Lorraine has a new phone, and as always happens, you want to protect that little newbie. Being a knitter as wall as a quilter, Lorraine knitted herself a phone sock...in purple of course!.

Afternoon tea saw a presentation of some lovely goodies, including a few Gluten free items, - Thanks Christine - but the big hit was this delicious cake made for us by Tessa's Darling..major yummo.

There will be a bit of catching up to be done with the blog, there are lots of lovely quilts still to be shown from our Quilt Show, as well as pics from two Trunk Shows.

Our Raffle quilts went to great homes, and the proceeds were presented to Harold, the First Officer of the Ilkley and District Fire Brigade at an afternoon tea.
We even had the local tellie folks come along and film the presentations as well as the gals from the group showing off their ~~knitting~~ quilting skills.

"Lorraine Carthew came to the Cottage for one of her fabulous workshops. This one was creating landscapes using fabric to 'paint' the picture. Hundreds of tiny little pieces were cut and arranged to create a 'photo' of a favourite scene.

'Never Ending Quilt'

"This is a Wedding Ring Quilt, 14" rings, 8 rows x 8 = 64 rings.
My friend Katie and I decided we would like to make a wedding ring quilt each, so on the 6/4/05 we went fabric shopping and found this fabric in the last shop at Indooroopilly. We both were very happy with our purchases and drove home. 8 months later I said "Katie I think we should start our quilts or we may never finish them". So we started meeting every fortnight, except during the holidays. We cut fabric, read instructions, drank lots of tea, a glass of wine here and there over 6 years! giggled a lot and our quilts started to come alive. My son Josh actually named this Quilt "The Never Ending Quilt". He saw the fabric when I purchased it, we saw 100's of pieces of cut fabric in my sewing room and then he went overseas for nearly five years. Before he left he cheekily said "Gee Mum it looks like this could be the never ending quilt the way your going"! Josh returned home twice over this period for a week or two and it became a bit of a joke about my Never Ending Quilt. Even on Skype he would ask "How's the Never Ending Quilt going Mum?!!"
Anyway I was determined to have it finished by the time he returned home but no, it wasn't quite finished. Then Katie found her receipt with the date we purchased the fabric and I said right, I'm finishing it before 6/4/11 and the Never Ending Quilt was finished two weeks before this date. I machine pieced the quilt. I wanted to do some trapunto in the rings for a different effect so our lovely friend Gwen showed me how to do that which ended up being a very big job. I hand quilted the whole quilt and I loved stitching every stitch.

'Nostalgia'

"I found the quilt design in 2009 whilst looking through the February 2007 Australian Patchwork and Quilting Magazine. The quilt was designed by Rachelle Denneny and it caught my eye as it was in my favourite colours of pink and green, green being the most predominant colour.
Anybody who knows me knows that I especially love pink, so as I wanted this to be the predominant colour, I swapped pink for green in the pattern and added my other favourite colour - cream. I love the 'olde worlde' look of the design with the 'Dresden Plate as the quilt centre, hence the name 'Nostalgia". The quilt is machine pieced and I found the Seminole border especially challenging but very rewarding.
My quilt has been quilted by Fiona Bell, 'the Quilting Fairy' and after the quilt show will take pride of place in our bedroom, along with the matching pillow shams and cushions that I have made to go with it.

"The quilt is a combination of hand stitched and machine pieced blocks. The flower pattern was taken from a really OLD book borrowed from a friend. The flowers were appliqued with blanket stitch by hand and the rest of the quilt just evolved from there.
It was completed in November 2010 after many years left sitting in the cupboard unfinished, waiting for the final border.

'The First Dream'

"Joining the patchwork group to be with friends, I was pressured after sometime to start "something" rather than just chatting.
Not being a needlework, or crafty person, I was handed materials and designs by Desrae, my mentor, to make a cushion, which was rather daunting.
However, 3 cushions later, the thrill of the challenges and the pleasant outcome I decided to turn the work into a quilt!
Playing with colours and choosing patterns from the book 'Baltimore Bouquets' by Mimi Dietrich and designing my own patterns became a joyful and relaxing time.
The final quilting design on the border was worked by Rosemary, a professional machine quilter, giving the quilt a rather romantic touch.

"My niece rang to tell me that she was having another baby and that the new nursery was Tiffany blue and owls. As I am her favourite quilting aunt she wanted to give me plenty of warning for the new baby quilt.

What on earth is Tiffany blue??

I'd never heard of it either so onto the web and looked up Tiffany and Co in Ney York and found their website is a pretty aqua colour. Hopefully this is what Meredith means by Tiffany blue, 'cos that is what she is going to get.

'Xmas Around the World'

"This quilt was made with my daughter Samantha for the wonderful man in her life whilst she was courting, he in Sydney and she on the Sunshine Coast.
She wanted to bring some Xmas Joy, in July to her darling man, and piecing the quilt made the whole household joyous.
It brought together the traditional design and the newer colour wash techniques.
The design comes from a colour wash class I did, with the famous Yan Pring in 1996 in the northern suburbs of Sydney. This design, is taken from the book, Colourwash Quilts, by Yan Pring and published by Express Publications 1995
It has been machine pieced using the strip piecing technique used in Yan's book and machine stippled on an old Singer treadle sewing machine born in the 1930's.
There are 9 different Xmas theme fabrics rescued from a Xmas stast, and very fine cotton wadding has been used so the quilt can be used as a table throw as well as a wall hanging".

TREE-mendous Quilt Show a tremendous success...

Wow, what a wonderful quilt show the girls put on, with many fantastic quilts both on display and for sale. Apart from the months/years of stitching, quilting and creating there is all the hard work of presenting the show...folks up ladders, discussions and decisions to be made, buckets and buckets of floral arrangements to be created and displayed as well as the hanging of all those lovely quilts...these are just a few pics of the many quilters and their families who worked so hard to create a wonderful atmosphere and quilt show.

...and these pics show a little of what it is all about, a Gran and her Grandies with the quilts she created for them.

"This Pinwheel quilt made from an idea of 9 very old designs when women used up scraps to make warm quilts for beds in winter.

I love scrap quilts and wanted to make one for my grand-daughters 21st birthday.

By using the pinwheel design I was able to use a large amount of my STASH as I endeavoured not to use any fabric more than once.

Her favourite colours are urple and green so I added the borders and backing in those colours. The quilt is machine pieced and was machine quilted by Fiona Bell".

Happy Birthday Inge!!
Yep, Inge had a rather special Birthday with lots of lovely celebrations including a fab afternoon tea at the Cottage courtesy of her lovely Daughter Betty.
The Birthday Cake was a yummy affair with slices of fresh strawberries over the top...

plates and plates of wonderful goodies to munch on and some of the best curried egg sandwiches I've fanged since....well since the last time!
Betty then popped herself up on a chair to take this great 'Birthday Party' Pic of the group.

Debby, one of the Needlework group, joined us for Patchwork, she is starting on a cute floral applique quilt for her bed, 3 blocks done so far, great job Debby!

The Ladies on the Top Table.......is that is 'top of the class' table? 'top gals table'? or the table at the top end of the room?.. or all three?......anyway, they are all busy beavering away for the Big Tree-mendous Quilt Show that is coming up in a rush, Winifred is creating a lovely cushion, appliqueing a pieced tumbling blocks to the cushion front. Louise is also creating a cushion, lots of lovely hand quilting going on there! and Dorothy is knitting up a storm with a squiggly scarf, lots of little 'fingers' down the side that will twist and turn as the scarf grows.

We were all very sad when Lorraine H decided to re-locate back to Tassy, Lorraine was a very involved group member, taking on Leadership of the Thursday night group, and always happy to share her knowledge and tips, lots of which she learned from the many local classes and retreats that she attended.
Although Lorraine has been able to keep up with all our news and work by accessing our blog through her local library, we have just had little snippets now and again, so it was a wonderful surprise to finally get an e-mail from her, yep, finally on the net...well it takes time to get connections and cables laid when you live in the middle of a National Park on a Tassy coast! ;)

The most exciting bit of news? remember the stunning Lone Star quilt Lorraine shared with us before she left?, then a flimsey, it has since been finished and entered in the Annual Quilt Guild of Tasmania's show....and won 4th Place. Congratulations Lorraine!!

"However, I have been able to keep up with all the Buderim Group news when I travel into town and visit the Library using their computers. It seems like you all are still producing lovely work and having a lot of fun. As soon as we arrived here, I joined the local Patchwork Group - Wynyard Cottage Patchwork - and I have really enjoyed attending their meetings. They are a lovely group of around 25 members who meet 3 times a month in each others homes. There seems to be a big emphasis on hand work down here with lots of beautiful applique and hand quilting everywhere! I have also joined the Quilting Guild of Tasmania and recently went to a wonderful retreat with them - 5 days of unlimited quilting in the middle of Tasmania in a lovely mountain setting. A few weeks ago, the Annual Quilt Show for the Guild was held in Launceston in conjunction with the Craft Fair. I had some quilts entered, and was lucky enough to win an award! My blue and white lone star quilt was awarded 4th place in the Amateur Traditional Section. As this was the largest section in the whole show, I was really surprised to get an award. It was so exciting to be at the show and see all the wonderful quilts there, and one of mine with a rosette on it ! I have attached some photos of my quilts at the show."

Lyn Ballinger Challenge

Great excitement at this weeks meeting, it was our annual Luncheon and Judging of the Lyn Ballinger Challenge. This year, in keeping with our Quilt Show Theme of 'International Year of the Forests' our challenge was to create a 'green' shopping bag from calico and re-cycled fabric. The feature fabric, at first sight, could only be described as, well, ugly really. But what a star it turned out to be!, those clever quilters created some really cute shopping bags. Now as the 'Viewers Choice' voting is to take place at our Quilt Show on the first weekend in June, I can't show you all the finished bags....but...I can show you some of the innovative ways the girls used 'that fabric'

There are leaves galore, singly and as bunches, hearts, suffolk puff flowers, letters, logos, buildings and baskets. How innovative is all that!

The Luncheon itself was organised by our 2 Professional Luncheon Co-ordinators, Queen Fran and Duchess Beryl, who had their tiaras firmly in place to prove their claims, they did a great job of presenting the many delish dishes, keeping everyones glass topped up with a selection of champers, punch and chilled fruit water and just generally setting out the room with lovely green table decorations.

and of course, there is always the 'behind the scenes' workers and helpers who make these occasions sing along without a hitch.

Judging this year was by Patchwork Group co-founder, Rose, who in keeping with the theme, wondered if perhaps she was a re-cycled Judge, having previously judged a challenge 10 years ago.

We also had some great Show and Tell, some of which was from a week or so ago, sorry I've missed a couple of posts, it's all the new pup's fault, I seem to rush from sunup to sundown and beyond with a roll of loo paper in one hand and a mop in the other, chasing behind a new puppy that can only be described at 'mischief on a stick'

Sue bought along a couple of cushions from last century, yep she finally finished them!!. Both cushions used Sue's own hand dyed fabrics.

Now why is Susie hiding behind the 2nd cushion?, she was having a little sob...somehow or other, in the cushion swap over, all Sue's colour co-ordinated, organised tinsy little applique pieces got dumped on the floor!.....I kid you not! and what is worse, somehow, one of them disappeared. Drat!.

Janet has used a pattern from on of our Library books on using Jelly rolls to create this wonderful quilt. Yep, apart from the background all the colour pieces are from a Jelly Roll!

Here is a closer view, it takes clever colour matching to create that larger triangle but as you can see, Janet has done a brilliant job of creating those large triangles.

The quilting, which so suits the quilt design was done for Janet by Fiona of the Quilting Fairy. Fiona used a variagated thread for extra flow in the quilting design.

Val has been commissioned to make two quilts for twin little girls, she bought along finished quilt number one to share with us. Wonderful vibrant colours bring this pattern to life.

Wendy bought along her finished 'Chinese Lantern' table runner done in a recent in house workshop with Janice.

Janette has created another wall hanging for her home, a lovely stained glass creation with the neatest blanket stitched applique.

Chinese Lantern Workshop

Another wonderful workshop presented by Janice this week, this time on the versatile 'Chinese Lantern' block, and with the help of a few 60 degree rulers we saw some very interesting blocks emerge. Two new members were concentrating on getting those templates 'just right'

and at end of day Lorraine had a stunning table runner flimsey to show for her efforts, of course in purple!! the fave colour range after all.

The gals not involved in the workshop had their own little challenge. New member Caroline bought along a flimsey for some help and advice. Strip pieced colours of the outback with an appliqued frilled neck lizard in all his glory. There were some great suggestions made - looking forward to seeing the finished quilt , it will be stunning!.

While busy out in the back room creating lanterns, Lorraine still had time to share this cute stitchery, knowing Lorraine is fond of bees - well you would have to wouldn't you, being a bee keeper?, anyway Janice gave Lorraine this really cute pattern

to create a wonderful stitchery.

Lynn bought along this wonderful colourwash heart, a lap quilt to be that she is making for a lady who needs a little love in her life.

Di's Trunk Show

Here is another beauty. Di's black, white and red quilt which she made on a weekend away with her bossy stitches girlfriends. Yes we all know who they are. Love this quilt Di, it is fabulous.

Remember that 'last Australian Quilt' of Catti's last week?, well it may be the last finished Aussie quilt but there is another quilt in the offing...Cattie bought along this flimsey to share. Buttonhole applique and made from an Ella & Skysie pattern, one of a series of Hats, Bags and of course Shoes.

Julie has been busy creating these two quilts for the Sales section of our up-coming TREE-mendous Quilt Show.

Both quilts are simple designs (so says Julie) with a stunning look.

Judy created this lovely using Japanese prints from her stash for a very special person in her life. It's to be posted off as a surprise in the next week or so, so not too much can be said at this point.

Each Cottage Group takes it in turns to place their works on display in the Atrium display cabinet. This month it is the Needlework gals turn to skite and share.

Fran, who had been to lunch with some of the girls bought these tiny beauties back to pop into the cabinet

The proceeds from our wonderful Raffle Quilts will be going to a very worthy cause, to help support our local volunteer Fire Brigade, the Ilkley and District Rural Fire Brigade. These worthies, along with many other volunteer Brigades throughout Australia, give their time, energy, and experience not to mention fire fighting skills to help protect us from the devastation that a fire can bring.
Sheila invited Harold Baxter, the First Officer of the Ilkley and District Brigade along for us all to meet and for Harold to give a very informative talk on what is involved with the running of a volunteer group and how they have to go about raising funds to keep themselves viable, since the slashing of Government funding.
Harold mentioned just how hot the fire retardant suits are, and after a little bit of a try on, I can tell you, he's right!

So after another yummy arvo tea, we waved bye to Harold and some of us got down to work at sandwiching a quilt, this one Ailsa's Hidden Wells, started in the recent workshop the group had.

Some people do, some watch and the rest of us just offered vital advice......some of it was even listened to, not acted on mind, but listened to.

And why is this post sooo late?, well here's a little hint.

Yep, a family wedding..the Bride was radiant, everyone was Glam but this little treasure stole the show.

We have been privileged to have such a wonderful, productive and giving member in Catti, she has kept us in stitches with her stories and greatly amused us with her astonishment at good 'ole Aussie sayings, but sadly Catti will soon be flying home to her native land, something that came home with a bit of a bang yesterday when she presented her last Australian quilt for show and tell, and I suspect she kept the best for last, showing off this superb quilt to us at yesterdays meeting.

Catti was glowing in her praise of Gwen as a teacher and very grateful to have had the opportunity to learn all the different aspects of quilting in the series of workshops presented by Gwen last year.

That favourite day of the year for many came around last Sunday, yep, you guessed it, 'Mother's Day', lots of flowers and pressies made an appearance but Janice reckons she got one of the best. Her Daughter, who does lovely cross-stitch inserted a native kangaroo paw flower into this sewing compendium as her gift. Janice has just about worn it out with pats!!

and when she wasn't strolling and patting, Janice was stitching down the binding on this lovely quilt, the top was a donation, and Pamela Jones from Kimz Sewing and Patchwork Center in Warana very kindly did the beautiful quilting in between the chains, the finished quilt will be raffled at the Biggest Morning Tea being held at 'Craft in the Chapel' in Nambour next Thur.19th.. Pop along for a cuppa and a chance to win.

Maree bought along a 3-D wall hanging that she made about 2 years ago through Quilt University, just to show some of the gals what is available as quilting courses with Quilt University. '4 Elements' is a very textural wall hanging, with silver lightning bolts shooting throug 'Air',and even tiny shells stitched to the sand in 'Water'

Quite a while back, the gals that generally sit at the ~~noisy~~ err...end table, found a rather enchanting quilt with pattern and directions in one of the quilt magazines from our library, they were so entranced it was decided to do a 'friendship' challenge quilt. Sadly some have fallen by the wayside but Wendy has finished the first of the challenge quilts with promises of more to be shown at our up-coming (more like up-rushing) TREE-mendous Quilt and Sale Show in July.

Betty has been working on a Japanese Fabric Hexagon quilt, and bought in the finished flimsey to share with us "Just something I ran up in my spare time" she commented when asked what her inspiration was, ....and then added "and just something to use up my spare money", bit tongue in cheek.

Heather has been knitting up a storm for her new Grandie to be, the first babe for one of her daughters. Bub will be born in the middle of winter in Sydney so those cute little cardies will be just the ant'z pantz.

We were also give the chance to grab some goodies courtesy of Ruth and the lovely folks at Neuendorf Interiors. Ruth came along with boxes and bags of fabric offcuts and ends, just the thing to make loads of cushions, and other house-hold bibs and bobs. One of our more energetic gals even had the idea of re-upholstering her day bed in a patchwork design! Looking forward to seeing the finished article.

Marcia is busily crocheting a knee rug for friends she and her Darling will be visiting next week, yep, next week!, and although she was busily telling a rather hilarious tale from her last holiday, as you can see, those fingers didn't stop for a second.

Crocheting is really 'The Thing' at the moment, Marguerite is also making a knee rug, sadly I chopped her head off in the pic!........no I didn't!, I just had a flat battery in the camera and by the time I took a pic of Marguerite everything was way way fuzzy, but heres the goodies anyway. Sorry Marguerite.

And as some of us know, Lorraine is an apiarist, she often supplies us with lovely local honey, always a different flavour and colour, depending on the flowers and seasons, well, long story short, the talk yesterday got around to bees and our local blue banded bees, yep blue bees, or blue bottomed bees, or even Amegilla Cingulata if you want to be flash!, however you say it, it's a bit of a startlement when you first clap eyes on one I can tell you, so if you have never seen one - here is a pic

Jenny's Trunk Show

Yes, another month has rolled around and it's time for another Trunk Show from the Thursday Night Girls, this time it is Jenny's turn to astonish and astound with her many beautiful quilts, bears and cross stitcheries.
Be warned, the Trunk Show posts by their very nature are photo heavy but well worth the viewing.

Jenny had lots of lovely art work which she has bought from people selling on the side of the road in South Africa. The Zulu women raise money for Aids.

Bead work is done by Zimbabwe instead of Zulus. Unfortunately the women don't make as many of the beautiful items today.

Jenny started quilting 25 years ago when fabrics and books were very scarce. Her 1st quilt is in South Africa with her Mom. Jenny loves paper piecing and hand quilts all of them except 2, and Jenny has made a lot of quilts.
This quilt is her 2nd quilt, there wasn't much fabric due to apartheid.

Jenny made this star quilt on the machine.

This quilt is paper pieced by hand, its very worn and has been very loved over the years. It used to be very bright.

This quilt is a polyester scotty dog quilt made for her daughter

Love this one, Jenny has collected lots of Doilys and made a doily and denim quilt. Doilys are hand embroidered.

Jenny made this 'Nelson Mandela' quilt. One of her friends in South Africa made some of the fabrics.

Jenny has said that she actually likes the back better.

Jenny took a long time to finish this quilt as she didn't really like it. It's a paper pieced kite scrappy quilt.

This is gorgeous, another paper pieced pastel quilt with beautiful appliqué flowers. Jenny loves paper piecing.

Jenny created this soft pastel quilt using elongated hexagons.

Jenny made this suffolk puff quilt last year, it is sooo cute and her dog George just loves it.

Another hexy quilt Jenny started last year after visiting the Ipswich quilt show, where she saw the worlds longest quilt. Yes, they are 1/2" hexies done in reproduction fabrics. Jenny is just finishing it off. It is a wall hanging.

This is a raffle quilt she made and was quilted by our quilting fairy, Fiona.

Another quilt made for a class that Jenny teaches at the Angel. The flowers have raw edges, looks great.

Jenny loves making mini quilts for her laundry.

This was Jenny's first crazy patch bag and this is what got her hooked on crazy.

Yep, not a single completed article for Show and Tell on Wednesday, the Girls are all gearing up for our up coming TREE-mendous quilt show, and were all busily starting new projects or finishing off bindings etc.

Lorraine is stitching 'Love Is..' a freebie from Paula Stoddard, a link to this cutie is in our side bar.

After many weeks of having her arm in a sling it was great to see Fae slowly getting back into her stitching, and Winnifred has tamed her paper pieced 'octopus', so named because it kept curling around her arm. She is turning it into a European sized cushion cover.

Do have to confess though, there was an awful lot of skylarking going on, especially with Julie chasing around selling raffle tickets to our quilts, she got just about everyone, and not just a ticket mind you, a book a go!

Judy was about to launch into the binding on this vegetable themed stack and slash place mat, Innes is just finishing off the binding on her runner while Marguerite, Fran and Betty all had busy fingers but were enjoying a bit of a goss while hard at it.

Sheila is working on a requested Blue quilt for her Granddaughter Zoe, based on the Jan Mullins square in a square design and using motifs of all the loves in Zoe's life, her music, love of animals and marine creatures, and of course, a big X, love from Grandma. Sheila is working on the quilt in sections and will join them after the quilting is completed.

Our Easter Fair...

...was a bit smaller than previous years, however we certainly had a wide range of goodies on display and for sale and the cottage looked a treat all spruced up in it's new dress.
The very first quilt to catch your eye as you entered the Patchwork Group's Sales Room were these two, a clever 'I Spy' version of the disappearing 9 Patch and a 3-D floral wall hanging, sadly the only way to photograph anything on this wall is to pop into the cupboard opposite - and wouldn't you believe it! someone was already in the cupboard - doing important things and organising, so please forgive the pic.

The Geisha Girls in this Oriental inspired Wall Hanging were created using Machine Embroidery, paired with just the right fabric combinations in the Dresden Plates, along with a use of piping between the blocks and clever quilting to make this a real eye catcher.

The large Snowball quilt got a lot of interest, all those tiny pieces and beautifully intersecting seams. The clever design of the outer edge blocks help to create an impression of a 2nd border.

The Patchwork Girls met market demand with the supply of smaller quilts this Easter, including a number of children's quilts such as these cuties.

There were also a range of designs and colours in Lap and Smaller quilts, to suit all decors and ages.

This bright Hourglass/1 Patch combination would be loved by any little recipient, and if the colours were not just the right thing, the pastel pink and blue around the corner would surely be the ant's pantz.

Along the line of more adult quilts there was also a large range of designs and colours, including this clever blue and white quilt. All straight edge piecing but giving the illusion of circular lines.

A recent in-house work shop on the Hidden Wells design and variations produced some lovely quilts, such as this lovely.

There is the promise of a nip in the air today, which makes me wish for the warmth and softness of this lovely raw edge design using soft flannel fabrics. The wall hanging was one of the creations from another in-house workshop on Tessellated Quilt Designs taken from Christine Porter's book 'Tessellation Quilts"

Amongst the wonderful display of quilts there were tables of smaller items offered for viewing pleasure and sale. Bags, bibs, baskets and bunnies were a few scattered throughout the tables.

There were Beach Bags, Aprons, Soft Toys, lots of hand and kitchen towels, table linnen and the cutest 'cup and saucer' pot holder.

Sewing Machine Mats, complete with little thread bins and matching pincushions, 'Crazy' silk shoulder bags decorated with the prettiest stitching and plaited shoulder straps, lots more pretty aprons and potholders.

Very handy hand massages, just right to take a break at the machine and relax those fingers, Luggage Tags to easily identify your luggage, coasters, tissue holders and stitching compendiums, all backed by a fresh lemon baby quilt.

And how special would you feel wearing this wonderful Sashiko inspired Vest, just the thing to keep the winter chills at bay.

Just outside the Patchwork Group's Sales room, the Needlework Ladies had their 'Novelties' table all set up with a huge range of Easter Egg inspired goodies for the little folks. The Novelties table is expressly aimed at providing small quality gifts for the kiddies to spend their pennies on and be part of the 'Fun of the Fair'. It has a faithful following of littlies who visit Fran every Fair Day.

Further along the Machine Embroidery Group, many of whom are also Patchworkers, had their tables set out with a huge range of beautiful goodies all under a Happy Easter banner

There was even the cutest quilt decorated with Matryoshka Dolls, with its own little soft doll in the Martyoshka style and matching Martyoshka pillow case, and some beautiful table linnens, including this tray cover worked with twin needle embroidery.

And what an eye catching way to display your beautifully worked jewelry, Turquoise and Silver, Stunning!

Our Easter Fair Extravaganza and New Members

The excitement is mounting in our neck of the woods, our big Easter Fair is only days away, on Saturday 23 April and we are all looking forward to showing off our new kitchen extension, the Cottage renovations and updated Garden Entrance.......mind you, there is a bit of a push going on to put the finishing touches into place with a working bee this Saturday to lay the pavers, and of course we all have our fingers and toes crossed that the car park is finished in time.

Jackie O. joined our group a few weeks back and promptly took herself off on a bit of a holiday, she joined us today and bought along this beautiful Baltimore quilt. Although it took Jackie 2 years to create, each block only took between 7-11 days to complete!. Jackie was shown how to do needleturn applique and as so often happens, she was hooked.

Many of the blocks in Jackie's quilt are her own designs, with others inspired by traditional Baltimore Album designs. Hopefully Jackie will be bringing this wonderful quilt along to our up coming Quilt Show for you all to have a drool over 'in the flesh' so to speak!
Jackie quilted around the design in each block but had a friend machine quilt the borders in a double heart design.

End of day, Jackie's Darling came along to help pack up the quilt, couldn't resist getting another pic, this time including the top row.

Janet's Daughter gave her a book on 'Skinny Quilts' for Christmas, and Janet set herself the challenge of making as many as possible using her stash only! This vibrant creation is Janet's second from her book and stash with number 3 already in the works.

Two new members joined us yesterday and were settled in and made to feel welcome by Fran, our charming 'welcome committee'.
Lynn bought along her scrap pieced flimsey, made by request for her Grandson who is moving out of home in the near future. Using many 'memory' fabrics from her scrap pile, Lynn created each block from a central hexagon, adding strips by just diving into her scrap box and sewing her little heart out.

Our second new member, Jenny bought along some lovely Beatrix Potter print fabric to work on, looking forward to seeing Jenny's completed creation.

Christine also bought along a flimsey to share with us, made in a one day 'Stack and Slash' workshop down at the Angel, Christine decided to join the blocks using a gold bias tape.

She then choose some nice wide bias binding to be incorporated into the borders, but wouldn't you know it, it was one tinsy little inch too short!...what to do....while playing around with the problem Christine thought of popping a little embroidery over the bias binding join, she liked the effect so much she did the same in each of the corners. Brilliant solution Christine. Hopefully the completed quilt will be for Sale at our Easter Fair.

Betty bought along another 2 Quilts of Love for the Selengor Hospital, she is also working on pieces of Hardanger, "Oh just using up some leftovers" she airily told me........have you ever done Hardanger?...it doesn't start with Hard for no reason!

Sue has very kindly offered to deliver the Quilts of Love to Selangor for us on her way through that neck of the woods. Thank you Sue.

Judy Wiltshire Quilt being raffled....

Opened the Buderim Chronicle, our local paper, to find an article featuring this wonderful and vibrant quilt made by Judy is being raffled.

A quick call to Megan at the Chronicle and she sent us this image to use here. Thank you so much Megan.

Judy always created the most amazing quilts, all beautifully worked, and this one is no exception, hand done in lovely vibrant colours it is the last quilt Judy worked on before she was taken from us.
Proceeds of the raffle are for the Buderim Local Ambulance, a very worthy cause.

To get your ticket.......or really, at $1.00 per ticket, more likely to be tickets, pop along to the Ambulance stall at the Buderim Easter Fair on Saturday 23rd April, they are usually on the veranda overlooking the Cottage and lawn area.

The Easter Fair has been a feature of our local Easter celebrations for many years, and brings a range of local crafters together at the one location. The Lions Club allocates stalls in the Memorial Hall to various crafters whilst the members of the Craft Cottage have a huge variety of hand crafted goodies from all of our 13 groups, such as beautifully hand painted ceramics, Wall and Garden art of many mediums, stock up on designer greeting and birthday cards from the Calligraphy Group, a special memento box or article from Machine Embroidery, a myriad of hand knitted, Lace or embroidered goodies, something special from the talented gals in Fiber Arts and of course, a chance to grab a special quilt to snuggle into in the coming cooler months.............oh and guess what?? if you manage to find the display of the Patchwork Group's raffle quilts for our upcoming quilt show in June....and you look very carefully, betcha you can find a raffle ticket just sitting there asking you to take a chance.
Wow, talk about a chance overload, 3 astoundingly beautiful quilts will be won this year by 3 lucky people!...........oooh, makes you go shivvery all over with the excitement of it all. Good Luck to all ticket buyers, and who knows, maybe the winner is YOU!

Quilts made with lots of love for kids affected by the Floods

The Thursday night girls have been ever so busy making quilts for kiddies. Debby has sent us piccies of quilts made and tells us all about them. Thank you Debby

On our first night back after Xmas Di W suggested that we make and donate some quilts for children who have lost everything in the floods. Great idea Di.
The next week we arrived with fabric, sewing machines, and cutting boards ready to sew.

June is hoping a special little boy gets this cat quilt

Thank you so much ladies for giving your time, fabric, enthusiasm etc. to make these very colourful and happy quilts. I know there will be some very happy children snuggling into these very soon as the nights get cooler. We have been in contact with the Northern CWA. We have also heard that Gail Chalker of Sew Creative in Gatton is organising collections of donations for Grantham as well. Fortunately with both we are able to get free transport as we have also collected books, fabric, thread, patterns etc so we have quite a collection of goodies for some very needy friends. We will make a decision in the next week. Thanks so much again ladies. It's such a pleasure being involved with such a warm and caring group of ladies. Debby.

Last of the Library Bags...

Yep! this bag made by Sheila was the last cab off the rank! bringing the total library bags made in the 2 week period allowed to 102 bags, surpassing the 90 that had been requested.
Machine Embroidery Group was asked to make as many as they possibly could to help out the kiddies at three of the flood affected schools in Ipswich, 90 being the total number needed, with help from the Patchwork Group the target was reached with a few extras that can be pressed into service to tote togs to school swimming lessons, so they certainly won't go astray. Well done all!

Sue had a bit of a UFO clean out, Catti snaffled them up and finished off the goodies for our Sales Table. Thank you to the donor and the finisher...

Catti also made this cutie, the 10th Quilt of Love requested by the Selengor Private Hospital.

We saw Catti's WIP, the windmill quilt last week, and here it is all finished! It's to be a pressie to her Mum in Switzerland when Cattie flys home for a visit.

Made from a pack of co-ordinating fabrics received a few years back with a magazine subscription renewal Lorraine has created this 'floor' quilt for her Great Granddaughter Charley. Originally there was a pattern included but as quite a number of the 10" squares happened to include the selvedge edges in the measurement, the box was put on the shelf to await inspiration. Lorraine has cleverly cut and assembled the blocks used to form a stepped pattern while still using some of the 1 patch blocks. There was enough fabric left over to allow Lorraine to piece the binding to match the quilt.

Jackie bought along two of her completed wall hangings, both of which spent quite some years in the UFO pile.

Another month has passed.......gee isn't that scarry, seems like just a few days ago I was posting last months Trunk Show for you to see. This month we were treated to the wonderful work of Debby who has also organised the pics for us. Thanks so much Debby.

Debby has attended crazy quilting classes with Jenny at Patchwork Angel for about 4/5 years. She loves doing these classes with Jenny although she said it does make you a little crazy at times.

And it just gets crazier!! This is a 9 x 9" block encyclopedic quilt. A wonderful idea to look back on for ideas with your next crazy creation!!

Debs 1st quilt, her favourite, it's a bed topper. She made the hexies about 15 years ago and didn't know how to put them together until she started with the Thursday night group about 7 years ago

A mystery quilt was organised about 5 years ago. so Debs thought it would be good to get out of her comfort zone and make something different, she made it for her sisters 50th in her colours. She loved it!

Here is a scrappy quilt done on a Thursday night with Jenny. About 9 girls joined in and they had great fun. In front is a colourful Marinar's compass, another weekend course a few years ago.

An Upgrade and a Machine for Sale

While at the recent Craft Show in Brissy with her Darling, Wendy was drooling over the latest Model Phaff, and guess what? her Darling bought it for her!......lucky girl!. Anyway she now needs to make space in her sewing room, which will be great news for some lucky person. Wendy is offering her old machine (at 3 years old it's barely a teenager, let alone old) at a very reasonable price, a mere $500.00! See the sidebar for machine and contact details.

Friendship Quilts and the story behind 'Everlasting Friendship'

A very special meeting for us this week bringing together some of the ladies who created the blocks used in our raffle quilt 'Everlasting Friendship' from the friendship quilt swap way back in....well, a few years ago shall we say.

As is often the case with Friendship quilts, indeed with many quilts - after all, where would we be without our collective collections of UFO's?- Beryl never managed to form her needle turn applique blocks into a quilt, preferring instead to keep them in a safe place, perhaps taking them out from time to time to pet, pat and admire, until current times when downsizing meant finding a new home for her blocks, which is how our group managed to have the blocks given to us.
Unfortunately Beryl wasn't able to join us today, so her Darling, Allan came along as her representative.

Standing in front of both raffle quilts, some of the original swap group, from left to right, is Fae, Jan, Dorothy, Rose, Jill, Allan and Joyce.
There were a few missing faces, times change and folks move on and up but there were many happy stories so that those missing were rememberd and 'introduced' to those of us who had not met them.

We were treated to some lovely Show and Tell from our Guests, Jan showed off her love of Crazy Patch along with some other patchwork pieces.

Kangaroo wallhanging with the curved piecing showcasing the colours of Australia, the red center, dusty deserts, greens of the bush, purples of mountain ranges, not forgetting the vibrant blues of both sky and seas with of course the sporting Kangaroo.
More examples of Jan's work, the wonderful fabric flowers that she is renowned for creating, a lovely appliqe linnen tunic top, a reverse applique wallhanging of snowflake designs and a W.I.P. of the cutest lady Giraffe, Jan has used tiny black buttons running down her neck to depict the mane.

Another WIP from a workshop Jan did, the leaf is about to be framed. More of Jan's flowers adorning a Crazy Patch cushion and a Christmas stocking worked with beautifl Crazy Patch using lots of lace and flowers.

Jill bought along her Crazy Patch teddy with the crinkled nose and told us the story of entering her lovely bear in a show only to have the judges write back that although they loved the work, they weren't impressed with the wrinkly nose....a nose Jill had gone to quite some effort to achieve!

Rose had her journal of the first ever quilt assembled by Cottage members in 1986, before there was a patchwork group. The quilt was raffled and won by a Brisbane male nurse, Andrew Tucker. Andrew was from a local family and the quilt was in the family home here in Buderim until recently and is still in the families posession.
The quilt was named the 'Buderim Cottage Quilt No. 1'. Not only because it was made by Cottage members but also because of the local cottages and historical buildings Rose used for design inspiration of the appliqued cottages in the quilt.

The day started off with the Girls who are working on June's 'Pinwheel' workshop discussing various setting out designs and quilt sizes.....
Marguerite has decided to stick with the current size of her flimsey, setting the whole on point with some lovely vibrant green fabric.

Christine is also trying out the on point setting idea, using fabric from some of the pinwheels for continuity

As you can see, all those in the discussion think it's looking pretty swish.

Marcia was also getting advice on her pinwheels, she has opted to make a larger size, using more colours. Gee, doesn't the fabric stick well to the back of the vinyl tablecloth? By the by, that tablecloth is from Marcia and her Darlings caravan, and the pinwheels I hear are to make a replacement tablecloth for the van...how special will that be!.

Heather and Catti have their pinwheels a little further on, sandwiched and ready to be quilted.

Yep!, Catti used her printer to print out the words and then embroidered over the printing, adding a little posy of suffolk puffs...
which brings us to the front of the quilt...Catti is flying home this year and wanted a boquet for her Daughter. She has created this special Topiary wall hanging to be delivered in person.

Using suffolk puffs on the Topiary and in the vine border, with lots of lovely needleturn leaves topped off by bluebirds. Catti crosshatched the center of the quilt but had her first ever go at stippling in the border.

A couple of years ago Lyn was lucky enough to be holidaying in Sweden, where she saw, and of course bought, a length of fabric with a printed design of Swedish Horses. Lyn had the idea of making a tablecloth......Well, Lyn wasn't that fussed on just running a hem around the fabric and calling it quits, over the past two years she has used the Broderie Perse method to applique the Swedish Horses to a length of fabric, and using more horses has created a table runner for the center of the table.

The pic is a little misleading, the cloth is folded in half and just the end is in the pic, it is rather a large cloth, and you see why it took 2 years to complete!
Lyn has decided that all the Grandies are getting pillows for their birthday this year - yes they all have quilts- so cushions to follow. Using a pattern from Kelli Wolfshon Lyn has created the first cushion for her 2year old Grandaughter's birthday.

Betty spotted an appealing quilt design in a magazine piccie, and decided to re-create the same design, using these vibrant fabrics, well she tells us this is the 3rd effort at getting the design right. Sometimes the simple looking designs just aren't.

Betty went for a simpler design to create this apricot Quilt of Love, and Andrea used one of the Machine Embroidered pannels unearthed by Sheila last week to make the blue quilt.

While Inge stitched and created these two purple and lemon Q.O.L's with the cutest little baby Dragon motifs.
Afternoon tea was a special affair in honour of the occasion, lots of yummy food, sweet and savoury.

Blankets of Love and Library Bags

Everyone is a busy as a bee at the moment, lots of lovely quilts being made for our up-coming TREE-mendous quilt show, workshops and a bit of a rush on making Library bags for some of the kiddies from the Ipswich area who were badly affected by the Queensland Floods as well as some very pretty Blankets of Love for one of our local hospitals.

June's Pinwheel workshop started this week. June was busily explaining the finer points of creating this wonderfully bright tessellated quilt, lots of cutting was needed with Catti, Heather and Christine, hard at it, while Val sat by the window doing a little needlework while watching the class unfold - can't show what Val is working on....it's one of those Secret Squirrel things!

Val donated 2 blankets of Love, 1 patch in pastels, very pretty. Got some help from Janice to display them for us.

Janice's Blanket of Love is a lovely soft blue 9 patch, sashed and bordered with the same fabric as the 9-patch center.

Betty sent along this pretty pink for the Blankets of Love project,

Maree created this lovely Dresden Plate quilt using a Jelly Roll. Maree set the plate blocks on point and used a black sashing to set them off, quilting a Dresden Plate design in the central block. Maree then used her Machine Embroidery skills to applique a smaller Plate in each of the border triangles, using the colours from the Jelly Roll on a black background

Yep, you're right, got distracted and didn't get a pic of the quilt hanging........hope you can see enough in the preceding pics and the collage above 'cause as you can see it's a beauty!

There has been a start on the Library Bags for the Ipswich kiddies, Denise very kindly held these up for us to see, and the red bag?? no he wasn't wagging school.

Andrea cut the fabric to make a bag, but on a weekend sleepover, the Grandie decided he would like to make a bag to help out. He choose the design, choose the fabrics and did all the stitching. All on his own!
Am I proud?, you bet your little button up booties I am!

Marcia bought along this pretty pastel quilt with a 9-patch design using Machine Embroidered feature blocks, she made it as an 80th Birthday gift for a dear friend. Lucky friend!

Like all groups, we get donations of leftover fabrics and semi-finished projects. Sheila found these Machine Embroidered pieces in the box. Just the ant's pants for some Blankets of Love.

Crazy Patchwork Expo

Popped along to the Crazy Patchwork Expo that was held at the Patchwork Angel last Friday and Saturday.
Wow! talk about a sensory overload!, the workroom was chock-a-block full of wonderful beautiful pretties to drool over. Here are just a few pics of the lovely work taught by Jenny and created by her students.

There were many, many more wonderful pieces on display, and I am sorry that this is all I am able to post at the moment, if your lovely has not been included, I apologise, I will work away at posting all of the pics over the next few weeks.
Entry to the expo was by gold coin donation, the proceeds to be donated to the Cancer fund for Breast Cancer research.

Green Fairy Quilts....sometimes words just aren't enough...

...what to say???......I just stumbled upon this Blog. A self taught long-arm quilter of extraordinary talents who has just spent 70 hours quilting a Dear Jane quilt, the quilter has used Kaffe Fassett's fabric, and the Green Fairy has used a different quilting design for each block.
And you know what....Green Fairy is happy for you to use her pics for a peek!!! what a lovely sharing lady.

A blast from the past and Julies tinsy hexies

If you are one of the early birds to read today's blog, there has been a whopper of a mistake.....Pop down to the bottom to read about Wendy's Library Bags...........not only has there been help making those wonderful bags but more help is needed. And to the wonderful Machine Embroiders Group who made the bags........so, so sorry for my mistake.

Noticed Marcia and Meg in a huddle over one of the magazines Marcia had bought in to share around, Meg flipped it around to show.........It was an article in Down Under Quilts on the 1988 Caloundra Quilt Show, and there, in pride of place, was a pic of Meg's quilt!

Inspired by a quilt designed by Barbara (?? gosh...how embarrasement...I have misplaced the ladies name. I will add it as soon as I find it again- sorry.) and based on a log cabin block, it was a very heavy quilt. When Meg dropped it off to be hung she mentioned to the co-ordinators that it was heavy........little did they realise just how heavy. It just about bought down the house....literally. I bet there is someone out there who can fill in that story!
Meg no longer has the quilt........it is one of the many that she has given away.

We were all very interested to see Julie arrive today, clutched under her arm was a 'square' surrounded by bubble wrap. Yep!, it is her finished wall hanging. Some of you may remember pics in the past of the tinsy little hexies that Julie has been working on, all to create this wonderful piece. It has been stretched over a frame ready to hang in what is becoming quite a modern trend on quilted wall hangings.

Heather bought along her current flimsey, borders are the next step for this vibrant kiddies quilt, though Heather spent today knitting tinsy things, yep, good guess, Heather has a new grandie in her near future.

Sue was back with us today, lots of excitement in her world with goodies arriving and being unpacked, it's amazing what you find..........and just how long ago did you start these place mats Sue????

Sue also bought along her recently completed 'stars and clouds' quilt in blues and white with splashes of yellow, to share with us.

Janice was presenting a workshop on wrist pincushions, Marcia was particularly taken by the cardboard barrier to prevent pins sliding through into the wrist.........didn't stop someone (who will remain nameless) from grabbing the cushion for a better look and sticking themselves on the needle though!

Catti came prepared - and with a brilliant idea - pop a curly girl (or a stainless steel scourer if you don't come from my neck of the woods) into the center of the wadding. Keeps the pins sharp!!

Sheila had a go at the disappearing 9-patch when it was all the go in our group, and wound up with this little orphan, she teamed it with a pretty floral border and backing and...viola, a pretty cushion for your sewing room.

Caught Jan doing some extremely scientific and accurate measuring, not just once but twice, and then she was off, more crocheting to be done.

More needlework in the 'creating' phase, Marguerite left this pretty block lying on the table, just had to bring you a pic of it and Christine is back-stitching around the design on a sweet quilt panel.

Wendy has been busy making Library bags for some school children, with their names embroidered to boot. Wow! Lucky kiddies.
My humble apologies to the lovely Ladies from the Machine Embroidery Group for the inaccurcies of the Library bag story.
The Machine Embroidery Group was asked to make Library bags for 30 children, names were supplied and as you can see, the Ladies got out their machines and promptly created these lovely bags.

As we all know, Ipswich was one of the many badly flood affected areas, and these bags are off to one of the schools in the area. There is now a request for another 60 bags for another 2 schools, no names this time, so Wendy bought some of the finished bags along to Show and ask the Patchwork group if they would also be willing to create some bags as there is a rather small time window to have them completed by.

The bags will need to be handed in to Wendy by Wednesday 30th. March, just 2 weeks away!!

Each Library bag needs to measure 16" x 18" with a double pull cord closure. They don't have to be lined and any strong fabric is fine, including the rubber backed curtain fabric as some bags could then be used for 'wet bags' for swimming activities. Wendy has also suggested that you could use any orphan patchwork or applique blocks to decorate the front of the bags.

Hopefully we can all pull together and present a pile of lovely baggies to Wendy for these little kiddies who have lost so much.

Betty's Lovely Quilt

The center medallion is based on a pattern in the quilt book 'Birds of a Feather' by Barb Adams and Alma Allen.

One of our Thursday night members, Jenny indulges her love of Crazy Patchwork by tutoring at the Patchwork Angel, where some of our members are continuing their journey down the crazy path with Jenny. They have been doing some amazing work and so they have decided to give a Crazy Patchwork Expo in the workroom of the Patchwork Angel next Friday 18th March and Saturday 19th March.

Somedays, it's all under the table...

...bit disappointed yesterday, not too much hanging around for Show and Tell.......but the girls soon fixed that, it was all under the tables!. The Cottage renovations are still in full swing and really, we just don't have the space (or stands) to display our treasures.
Betty was finishing the binding on this wonderful quilt, applique medallion of Bluebirds and flowers, surrounded by kaleidoscope blocks, its a large quilt and will live on Betty and her Darlings own bed.

The fabrics were a gift from Betty's D-I-L awhile back, and sat in her stash awaiting inspiration, and as we can see, inspiration certainly did arrive!

Fran was working on a piece of silk 'Crazy Patchwork' with the addition of some Suffolk Puffs, (top left pic) it's to be one of her fast selling bags. Fran just happened to have a finished bag - yep, under the table! this one with a lovely braided silk shoulder strap.

Catti has been beavering away, organising the 'Leaf Notions' for our up-coming (fast upcoming) TREE-mendous Quilt Show, we reached our target some weeks back and for her organisational efforts Caitti was awarded our 'Star of the Month' at yesterdays meeting. She was almost as thrilled to receive the award as the rest of us were to have her win.

Just look at all those busy beavers in the background, when we get our Cottage back to normal, there is going to be Show and Tell in abundance!

Catti then pulled out a quilt - yeah, from under the table - to show us. A pastel take on the 'Hidden Wells' quilt from our workshop with June.

June wasn't able to be with us yesterday, but had sent along a flimsey of our next workshop showing a two colour variation. Striking design, can't wait for the workshop.

Browns and Kayaks

Bit of a slow day at the cottage yesterday,but a lovely pair of quilts from Julie.

Julie created these 'crossed kayaks' for her Guest bedroom, using the same fabrics with a layout variation

Gwen bought along her finished scarf, she loved the one Marcia created and got busy on her own version.

Part of the charm of this scarf is the varied sizes of the little crochet squares.

Catti had another wonderful piece to share with us, a beautifully embroidered stitching caddy to pop over the arm of your favorite chair as you stitch and watch tellie, possibly while having a little refreshment to make things hum along.

Spotted this handy dandy wrist pincushion - Janice will be presenting a workshop on 'how to' in a couple of weeks, so lots of variations will be floating around shortly

and that cute little roll on the quilt there??, It belongs to Jackie, strip pieced by hand 26 years ago! - I kid you not!

Jackie made this little lovely in a workshop all those years ago and then promptly went off and created an entire quilt using her new skills, and yes we have been shown that lovely.

An update on the car park work..........with a bit of a mystery...

We understand the huge hole (covered with orange plastic) probably a Buderim floater or a tree root had to be removed, we can see the point of the garden bed by our entrance, (nicely rounded concrete corners) and of course the storm water outlets, but no one can come up with an answer to what on earth the last pic is???not a Garden bed, earth is being compacted, and look at those sharp concrete corners! There have been some wild guesses......and I guess time will tell........but, please don't let it be a toilet block, just to block off a bit more of the view over the escarpment. (What is it with architects who think it's nicer to look at a brick wall than a view!!??)

Jane's Trunk Show and Tell

Last week the Thursday Night Group had another wonderful Trunk Show and Tell, this time it was the turn of Jane.

Jane had her Trunk Show & Tell on Thursday night. She was a little nervous but did a fabulous job showing a rather large group all the fabulous things she has made over the years. Nice to see so many faces.

Jane showed us her first sampler quilt that she made about 20 years ago.

Then she started coming to the cottage about six years ago now. Jane showed us her stack & slash quilt which has faded a lot over these few years which means only one thing. that it has been much loved. June showed us how to do this quilt. Then she made a striped swag quilt.

Look at this gorgeous butterfly quilt (pattern by Lynette Anderson)

& check out all those pinwheels, love the colours and these colourful, Japanese prints. Oh Jane it’s beautiful.

Then there is her block of the month quilt that she did at The Patchwork Angel, all done in civil war reproduction fabrics. I think Jane fell in love with civil war repro. fabrics after doing this quilt.
I love this next quilt, Jane's Dresden plate quilt which she put together very quietly & quickly its just gorgeous Jane.

Check out Jane's newest addition to her collection, a Tessellation quilt, wow this is spectacular.

Next Jane shows us what she has done so far with her 1/2" hexy civil war production quilt its also going to be wonderful. She has a few other friends doing this quilt as well some more advanced, others not so advanced!!

Now Jane's first love is actually embroidery & she has embroideries framed, little needle pouches & lots of absolutely gorgeous little bags. You are amazing Jane & they are so fine & the colours stunning.

Jane also had a bag addiction not so long ago & once she made one she just kept on making them & making them!! Love the hexy bag how about a lesson Jane?

Catti, had left her latest embroidery Show and Tell from Needlework on the display table, got a snap of that lovely for you.

June and the Girls were having many a discussion on the finer points of layouts with the 'Hidden Wells' workshop.

Wendy was putting in the last of the binding stitches to show off her completed version

and Val has completed her flimsey of 'Hidden Wells', it will be another charity quilt for Laurel House.

June bought this lovely vibrant quilt along to show us, her words "there is a pattern out there but I worked out my version on how to do it quickly in strips", well, we just had to beg for another class didn't we......so coming soon we will have lots of versions of this quilt. Wendy is already wondering if you could use 'I Spy' fabrics... and June had a suggestion for a very interesting border variation.

William Morris Fans
