Rose Haliday-Smith,

We are sharing some sad news today from Karen about Rose for others who may be interested.
Sue has unearthed a very helpful tutorial from Laura of 'So Very Easy' and the links to Kelli Fannins Pokemon, Harry Potter and Minecraft Quilt alongs.

Karen
"Hi all – it is with much sadness that Sue Webb has let Sheila know that Rose Halliday-Smith, a long time member of the Buderim Craft Cottage has passed away.
Rose was a valued member of Fabric Art as well as the Patchwork Group.

Rose was a judge of our rainforest challenge years ago. Sheila also thinks Rose and Marg Gibbs did the 50 years wall hanging design.

Funeral numbers are restricted but if anyone was particularly keen to attend the service for Rose, they should contact Sue Webb or contact me and I can pass the message on.

Our thoughts and wishes go out to Rose’s family and friends."

Lainey shared her thoughts
"Rose Halliday-Smith was the most creative and original person I have known.
She dabbled in almost all types of creative fabric ideas. She has exhibited and taught in venues almost everywhere.
She was always ready and willing to give help and advice, and, if necessary, a different viewpoint and she always did it with the most lovely way of speaking with a smile in her voice and on her face.
I haven’t seen her for a couple of years but she always tried to visit out quilt show and had nice things to say about everybody’s work.
A great lady and will be missed by me as well as many others.
Lorraine"

Sue has shared a link "I think this is a great video that shows how to get your wonky blocks square"

The tutorial has 3 versions of 'How to Block a Quilt Block' from Laura Anne Coia of 'Sew Very Easy'

Just the ant's pants for those multiple seamed blocks that sometimes end up just a smidge small on one corner or the other.

The very talented Kelli Fanning of 'Seriously, I think it needs stitches" has 3 quilt alongs that those with Grandies might like.
Not only the patterns & measurements but colour choices and a step by step construction guide simplifying the assembly of a themed quilt.

Her 'Harry Potter Quilt Along can be found here.

The Pokemon Quilt along is another popular one of Kelli's

The patterns I followed for my versions of Kelli's Minecraft Quilt Along

The Minecraft series has a wonderful selection of characters to choose from as well as a 'Minecraft Alphabet'

Quilt Show past and A Little Poem to make you smile.

Thought you might like to view some of our past quilt exhibition entries, this first from Stella.

We have Lainey to thank for this poem/giggle today.

Anyone remember the poetress Pam Ayres? Well, she's 73 and still going strong. This is her latest ode to coronavirus...

I'm normally a social girl
I love to meet my mates
But lately with the virus here
We can't go out the gates

You see, we are the 'oldies' now
We need to stay inside
If they haven't seen us for a while
They'll think we've upped and died.

They'll never know the things we did
Before we got this old
There wasn't any Facebook
So not everything was told.

There was sex and drugs and rock 'n roll
The pill and miniskirts
We smoked, we drank, we partied
And were quite outrageous flirts.

Then we settled down, got married
And turned into someone's mum,
Somebody's wife, then nana,
Who on earth did we become?

We didn't mind the change of pace
Because our lives were full
But to bury us before we're dead
Is like a red rag to a bull!
So here you find me stuck inside
For four weeks, maybe more
I finally found myself again
Then I had to close the door!

It didn’t really bother me
I'd while away the hour
I'd bake for all the family
But I've got no flaming flour!

Now Netflix is just wonderful
I like a gutsy thriller
I'm swooning over Idris
Or some random sexy killer.

At least I've got a stash of booze
For when I'm being idle
There's wine and whiskey, even gin
If I'm feeling suicidal!

So let's all drink to lockdown
To recovery and health
And hope this awful virus
Doesn't decimate our wealth.

We'll all get through the crisis
And be back to join our mates
Just hoping I'm not far too wide
To fit through the flaming gates!

The Girls on Fire...

Sue has another 2 wonderful quilts to share with us, made for her Twin Great Grandaughters.
Sue "Here are the two quilts that I have been making for the girls, I am happy that they are finished at last.
Now on to the next project"

same design, slightly different layout and of course a whole different colour pallet

Have a little of the 'bite the dust' going on in my neck of the woods, finally finished all the Minecraft characters for 3 quilts & 3 cushions, and got this one sashed yesterday, now just two more to sash and then the fun of sandwiching and quilting - need them done A.S.A.P.

Lotsa news, and the excitement begins to mount

Well, we all got the memo, Quilt Show is up and running...25th to 27th June, 9a.m. to 3p.m. each day. How simple is that!
The theme is 'Buderim Fabric Garden' can't wait to see all the lovely garden inspired quilts, a quick search found everything from a traditional floral applique like this beauty. Kim McLean's Flower Garden Quilt.

Missouri Star Quilt Co.'s you tube video for their 'Flower Garden Quilt'

and a modern twist with the Robert Kaufman freebie 'Zen Garden'

The 'Hanging Committee' are off to a good start. Pat and Yvonne have been around the Cottage with a tape measure and come up with a sizing guide for all our lovelies to be hung comfortably.

Got some news from Penny of 'Patchwork Angel' via Sheila with a store update.
"Thanks Sheila,

Yes if you could let your ladies know we have converted our Yarn corner to
our NEW SASHIKO corner. With lots to choose from.
The range is available both in store and on our website.

Also for the local stitchers our website has a Local Pick up option to save
postage ( like Click and Collect)

Our classes are getting started again and the best way to find out about
them is to be signed up in our FREE Loyalty Club
LOYAL ANGELS. That way you get an email as soon as they are announced. Pop
into the shop or give us a call 0754770700 to organise that."

A couple of wags have sent us a giggle or two, firstly this from Sue with the new days of the week and a couple of covid influenced observations.

"Until further notice the days of the week are now called thisday, thatday, otherday, someday, yesterday, today and nextday!

Can we uninstall 2020 and reinstall it again?... I think it has a virus

Just asked a 6-year-old he understands why there is no school. He said yes because they are out of toilet paper.

Coronavirus has turned us all into dogs. We roam the house all day looking for food. We’re told “no” if we get too close to strangers and we get really excited about car rides.

If you thought toilet paper was crazy ... just wait until 300 million people all want a haircut appointment.

2020 is a unique Leap Year. It has 29 days in February, 300 days in March and 5 years in April.

Does anyone know if we can take showers yet or should we just keep washing our hands???

You think it’s bad now? In 20 years our country will be run by people home schooled by day drinkers….

Day 7 at home and the dog is looking at me like, “See? This is why I chew the furniture.”

Cute bowl holders and a puzzle to solve

Sue has a puzzle for us all, and I can tell you its a relief to find the camel!!

• Find the camel and forget Alzheimer's for a few years.
• The Head is a test to see if you can find the camel.
• Doctors claim that if you can find the Camel, you are far from developing Alzheimer’s disease.
• It took me a while but when you see it it's so obvious

Sheila has been busily stitching away.
"I have been meaning to make these microwave holders for my families for ages. Finally started."

Tentatively moving forward...

...as restrictions ease, folk are more than ready to cautiously start moving back toward the life we once had. Karen is in coffee mode, organising coffee mornings of 10 outside the cottage.
A small patchwork group meeting was held at Sheila's to start working on ideas for our upcoming quilt show. The date has been chosen, the weekend of June 25th, more details will be added as they come to hand.
Theme suggestions have been narrowed down to four, a vote by members will make the final decision.

Soooo much excitement in the air, bet you have all been madly stitching that wonderful exhibition piece!

Another U.F.O and some interesting sites to look over

Wendy sent us a pic of this lovely, she also sent the story, and Ive lost it, not gonna bore you with the details, suffice to say, there is a little unhappiness in my little neck of the woods. (Big Sigh!!!)
But if I can remember the story it goes something like this...
Bought as a kit on a holiday in Hawaii (?) quite a few years back but when Wendy finally opened the pack, she found that the fabrics were nothing like those pictured.
As you all know, its the pic on the front of the pack that appeals. Result, unimpressed Wendy, but still she has turned out this cutie. Just love the movement.

Jackie has some lovely sites for us to have a look at:
Just thought of this story I heard.......from the Qld Spinners and weavers......
They are asking for squares from many avenues of textiles, all details come up when searching for Queensland Quarantine Quilt, some of our members might be interested.
Also I’ve just looked at the Facebook page of Qld Spinners and Weavers, WOW, look at a huge body of work from people all around the world, it blows your mind.......I only went back to early April.
That’s all folks.......Best Wishes.....Keep stitching.......Jackie

Ever heard of a quilt/wall hanging made from pretty hankies?,
this is another that keeps popping up on F'book.
Brenda Raleigh Lunsford, a member of the f/book group Scrappy Girls Club, folds pretty hankies into dresses, think origami folding. Brenda has a 12-14 min video explaining the method on Scrappy Girls Club, but you would have to do a search for it, however this link will take you to Bumblebee Linens for a step by step tutorial.

Brenda is in the midst of quilting her pretty little piece, you can see her work on this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqz8HSKDBKc&fbclid=IwAR1VsSyzzQ7JMxXwMlRHjJSj9Uno4IxSnkjUFXLXbDq-hj_jmJGZFoZNC1g
So make a cuppa and waste invest some time on the computer, who knows, inspiration may be just a click away

Some Catching Up...

Two lovely photos of lovely lasses have landed in the mail box.

First is from Sandy with a catch up for us on Fae.
Sandy "Lots of our ladies ask me how Fae is getting on (she lives in the same street as me) so I thought I would send along this photo.

It was taken late on Mother’s Day at an impromptu get together, with appropriate social distancing of course. Unfortunately her eyes are shut which is probably due to the wine - I’m not saying which one of us had the issue. She scoots around on her wheely walker and looks well (when not drinking copious amounts of wine). She says hi to all."

Looks like it was a great little get together. Thanks for sharing Sandy.

Karen shared a photo of Pat and her 'Big O' birthday catch up.
Karen "Attached is a photo of the birthday gift giving for Pat’s birthday earlier this year. Sheila and I delivered the gift Sunday week ago and it was lovely to catch up with Pat"
Hope you had a wonderful celebration on the day Pat. Thanks for sharing Karen.

Sheila's Drunkards Path and a sad U.F.O

From the first 'possible layout' Sheila has moved on
Sheila
'This is the 2 halves of my quilt top with my shibori stitching / dyeing as centre piece. Not keen on next stage but it has to be done!!
Hope we can back to Cottage sooner than later.'

The story of how this quilt came into being, its been in the 'interested/planning' stage for awhile.
Sheila
'This is the tiny picture that was my quilt inspiration It came from a Japanese quilt mag belonging to Gwen Mitchell which she gave away many years ago
Translation of Japanese text “The concept of the quilt is to“spreading from Centre out.
Bright coloured fabrics and various whites are used with accent with geometric pattern fabrics”
My Japanese trip guide Shuji , translated for me!'

Sheila's story got me to thinking about our U.F.O's and 'One Day' lists.

Decided to unearth my oldest U.F.O. and give you all a laugh and perhaps you will join me on a trip down the U.F.O. memory lane.
Of course, to share this madness with you the box containing the sampler had to be located. Being the slightly anal creature that I am, turning to an excel storage list quickly bought the box to light, not so quickly was the unboxing.
This sucker was boxed up many years ago and taped down when we moved 3 years ago. 3 year old packing tape! - not something to be undertaken lightly I can tell you, it splits, it sticks in a way you don't want to argue with and is just generally a bit of a mess and a pest. (and I have to tell you - there are more of these taped boxes lurking around-ugh!)

Just to add to the 'yumminess' of the exercise, the 'Sample Quilt' book on top was so old it has started to break down, I now have a space full of dust, plastic shards, sticky lumps and the curiosity of old handmade templates along with the leftover fabric.
The 'quilt to be' has obviously been hung on a design wall, I used to buy really cheap matress protectors, this sucker crackles as it is moved and the state of it as it was unfolded was rather scarry, you know the story, those yucky marks you get on any fabric that has been folded away for years.
By this stage I was really starting to worry about the whole exercise and was tempted to just shove everything back in the box and file it away it the tall green 'outdoor filing' thingy, but curiosity and a certain amount of early morning bravado stepped in. (you know that special time when everyone is asleep and there isn't much chance of getting sprung doing something that in the end you might not want to share)

Kinda glad I continued, the quilt blocks are in good nick, having been protected by the protector. Wish I could say they were a joy to behold, but nah...
so I guess the challenge is...
Choice 1. - Finish the sucker...honestly, not much chance of that happening.
Choice 2. - Break it down and convert it into charity quilts - the large blocks are 12" and there is quite a bit of leftover fabric so that could happen but honestly, why foist it onto some poor sausage.
or choice number 3.- Box it up and ignore it for a few more years.
Yeah, I agree, choice number 3!

Send a pic of your old U.F.O. or 'some day' plans. Lets all have a giggle at how times have moved on, not only with fabrics but also what we once thought was just the bees knees of quilt designs and if your 'one day' design has stood the test of time.

65 Year Anniversary...

Just got a very important heads up from Sheila.

"Hi Andy. Perhaps you could congratulate Marcia & Merv on their 65th wedding anniversary in next blog.
I just happened to ring today to see how she was going & she told me today was their anniversary!"

Congratulations Merv and Marcia

Hope its been a day of family, cake, champagne and sapphires.

Marie sent a couple of pics of her beautiful work to share with all.
Marie "This is a baby's quilt I have finally finished. Its one of my ufos."
"Marie This is something else I have had fun doing. A lot of people are doing jigsaws, this is my kind of jigsaw."

Now if you can get your brain around the 65years, here a a couple of giggle for you all.
Thanks Sue.
Lockdown lingo - are you fully conversant with the new terminology?

*Coronacoaster*
The ups and downs of your mood during the pandemic. You’re loving lockdown one minute but suddenly weepy with anxiety the next. It truly is “an emotional coronacoaster”.

*Quarantinis*
Experimental cocktails mixed from whatever random ingredients you have left in the house. The boozy equivalent of a store cupboard supper. Southern Comfort and Ribena quarantini with a glacé cherry garnish, anyone? These are sipped at “locktail hour”, ie. wine o’clock during lockdown, which seems to be creeping earlier with each passing week.

*Le Creuset wrist*
It’s the new “avocado hand” - an aching arm after taking one’s best saucepan outside to bang during the weekly ‘Clap For Carers.’ It might be heavy but you’re keen to impress the neighbours with your high-quality kitchenware.

*Coronials*
As opposed to millennials, this refers to the future generation of babies conceived during coronavirus quarantine. They might also become known as “Generation C” or, more spookily, “Children of the Quarn”.

*Furlough Merlot*
Wine consumed in an attempt to relieve the frustration of not working. Also known as “bored-eaux” or “cabernet tedium”.

*Coronadose*
An overdose of bad news from consuming too much media during a time of crisis. Can result in a panicdemic.

*The elephant in the Zoom*
The glaring issue during a videoconferencing call that nobody feels able to mention. E.g. one participant has dramatically put on weight, suddenly sprouted terrible facial hair or has a worryingly messy house visible in the background.

*Quentin Quarantino*
An attention-seeker using their time in lockdown to make amateur films which they’re convinced are funnier and cleverer than they actually are.

*Covidiot* or *Wuhan-ker*
One who ignores public health advice or behaves with reckless disregard for the safety of others can be said to display “covidiocy” or be “covidiotic”. Also called a “lockclown” or even a “Wuhan-ker”.

*Goutbreak*
The sudden fear that you’ve consumed so much wine, cheese, home-made cake and Easter chocolate in lockdown that your ankles are swelling up like a medieval king’s.

*Antisocial distancing*
Using health precautions as an excuse for snubbing neighbours and generally ignoring people you find irritating.

*Coughin’ dodger*
Someone so alarmed by an innocuous splutter or throat-clear that they back away in terror.

*Mask-ara*
Extra make-up applied to "make one’s eyes pop" before venturing out in public wearing a face mask.

*Covid-10*
The 10 kgs in weight that we’re all gaining from comfort-eating and comfort-drinking. Also known as “fattening the curve”.

A new scrappy with a hombre twist

Jackie has found a lovely new scrappy with a structured color layout for us to either make or just enjoy the video.
Jackie "I re-looked at this quilt a couple of days ago, it’s Anna Marie Horner’s 'Turn it up' quilt, a great scrap quilt, with a challenge as you separate your colours into light, medium and dark, Anna Marie takes you through the steps on YouTube.
Cheers for now.....Jackie"

Watch Ann Marie Horner on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=is_kzXfzmgw for an easy to follow and informative video.
Thanks again Jackie for keeping us inspired!
