2015 Quilt Show and Sale #5

Lots more lovelies for you today, but first an apology to my dear friend Marguerite.
Dunno what I did but I sure did it well.

'Happy Days'

now some of the girls get a bit gun shy when I want to take a pic of their WIPs, but thank heaven for this WIP pic.

Marguerite's version of the 'Leanne's House' quilts that a group of girls created just for the Quilt Show, they are all stunning with such wonderful embroideries and each one has been subtly changed.

It's a fantastic idea to incorporate into a quilt show and creates a bit of a buzz as viewers reach the realisation that  'I saw that around the corner, but it was different', and they then re-track for a comparison look.
Marguerite named her quilt 'Happy Days' as it reminds her of time spent chatting and working with her friends at the cottage.
It is hand pieced and embroidered by Marguerite.

"A group of us decided to do the same quilt for the Show.  When you find the others you will see how different they are.
The quilt was designed by Leanne Beasley
I hand pieced and hand quilted the quilt".

The original to our group was a darling version done by Marcia, who then decided to ask Leanne Beasley for permission to donate the patterns to our group's library and so the inspiration began.

'Retro Hexi'

 "This quilt was inspired by the Thursday night Buderim quilt group.  After seeing all the ladies beautiful hand pieced quilts I wanted to do one too.  I was inspired and coached by Jenny Clouston.  It took 18 months to do.  This is the first time I have EVER hand quilted.  Thanks Jenny for your guidance.

'Classic Cream'

"The quilt has candle wicking blocks alternated with 'crazy' patch blocks made of different laces and stitched fabrics.  It is a gift for my sister in law.
I used the quilt as you go method for this quilt".

"This is an original design.
The fabrics are 'Good Morning' from 'Me and My Sister' which I received as a special gift from our group 4 years ago.  I decided to have some fun with curved seams.
I machine pieced and machine quilted the quilt".

 "I heard we were going to be grandparents for the first time as I was completing my first ever quilt, Linda my quilting teacher said "now you have to make a quilt for your new little one"
My daughter in law (the mother to be) said "not too pink" my daughter said "lots of pink".  I think this is a nice compromise.
As a very new patch worker I decided to stick with a traditional Four Patch.

It was machine pieced, it is machine quilted with elephants by Linda from Annapolis USA".

"I am always looking for quilts for boys and there doesn't seem to be too many available.  Found this one in a 'Homespun' Magazine.
The quilt is a Claire Turpin design.
The quilt was machine pieced, appliqued by hand then machine quilted all by me".

 "The 'Cat in the Hat' is a favourite of my family so could not resist the fabric.  Decided to put him in the centre of the log cabin style block and use all fabric from the family as logs.  It was machine pieced and quilted by me".

"This quilt was made from a pattern called 'Practice makes Perfect' by Kay Meale.
I hand and machine pieced the quilt and I machine quilted it".

'Surf's Up'

'Made in a class at the recent Buderim Craft Cottage Winter School with tutor Neroli Henderson based on her piece 'The Churning'
The painted background is heavily quilted using machine embroidery stitches, the 'waves' are also painted, cut to shape and then fused over the background with straight line machine stitching.

'Flowers for My Lady'

"I loved these pale floral coloured fabrics and thought they would be beautiful made into a knee quilt for a lovely lady.  They are from a range by Robyn Pandolph, one of my favourite fabric designers.
It was machine pieced and quilted by Carmen Brown.

'Stitched With Love for Sheila'

Made by group members in appreciation of the work Sheila does as our group leader. Members supplied a square of fabric, everyone's name was then machine embroidered onto white logs, the blocks were then assembled and the quilt machine quilted by group members.

'Japanese Totes'

Inge created several of these tote's using Japanese print fabrics.  They were for sale as well as part of the quilt show.  Needless to say, they sold like hot cakes.

At end of exhibition Penny from Patchwork Angel decided to raffle off a lovely box of DMC threads.
In Penny's words.

The prize was awarded to The Patchwork Angel’s pick of the show. As it was a box of hand embroidery threads we used hand embroidery as the criteria for our selection. The winner was Karen for her Gingham Girls quilt designed by Red Brolly. Have attached a pic for you although I am sure you have taken one too.

There was even a congratulations from Bronwyn Hayes of Red Brolly for Karen on Patchwork Angel’s  Facebook

2015 Quilt Show and Sale #4 and Raffles collected

Such excitement at our meeting yesterday, chitter chatter on how the quilt show went, who sold what and folks dropping by to collect their raffle prizes.
Lainey had been at the Cottage through the morning but managed to snap a couple of pics of delighted winners in the arvo.

1st. Prize Raffle quilt was won by local patch-worker Debie who confessed she really had her heart set on winning 'Celestial Dream' and couldn't be happier.

We even had some Show and Tell, a stunning quilt made by Val for her Great Niece.

Starting off our #4 quilt exhibition post is a set of very special place mats.

'Among my Souvenirs'

"These place mats feature purchased reproduced images of Tasmanian animals and plants: free motion stitched with image created using thread.  They featured in the award winning art quilt, 'My Island Home' by Cindy Watkins, Deloraine".

'Tessalations'

"The Brigette Giblin pattern 'Tessalations' was my first experience into fussy cutting.  I love the bright and interesting combinations of fabric provided by Material Obsession as a block of the month project.  I added my own choice of fabric for the borders.
I hand and machined pieced the quilt and the machine quilting was done by Fiona, the Quilting Fairy".

"This was my first 'modern quilt' and I realised how many more blocks you have to do when there is no border!
The fabric is 'Home School' range by L.B.Krueger.  The design is 'Growing up Modern' by Allison Harris.  I machine pieced and machine quilted the quilt.

"I wanted to do some hand sewing and given my lack of skills at embroidery I tried my hand at Sashiko.  I bought a panel from BeBeBold at the recent quilt show in Brisbane and turned it into six cushions.  Ideal for my outdoor table setting".

"I found a star from a pattern called 'Shooting Stars' that I had made, I needed something to do on our 'Bossies'' week end away.  I started the quilt and have only just finished it.
I machine pieced and hand quilted the quilt".

"With not a lot of quilting experience I purchased this pattern and kit to have a go at a country theme.  I was surprised how easily this came together.  I used the quilt as you go method to put the blocks together but hand quilted the rest.  I also wanted to break my habit of always choosing pink and floral fabric.
The pattern was designed by T.Hylton for Patchwork Pumpkin".

' White House Hexagons'

"I have made this quilt with 1" hexagons.  English Paper Pieced, taking 2 years to complete, I first started basting the 'hexies' while traveling and watching my son Kart Race.  The layout is called Honeycomb Mosaic.  It was inspired by a quilt made by Maria Hester Monroe Gouverneur C1830, first daughter to be married in the White House.  Maria's quilt never was finished.  The quilt was hand pieced and machine quilted by me, the Quilting Fairy".

'Petit Fours'

"I really enjoyed making this quilt.  Using a Jaybird Quilts Hex'n' More ruler and my basket of quilt scraps.  The ruler allowed me to use various pattern pieces to come up with this design.  My husband said it looked like petit fours on a plate waiting to be nibbled.  Hence the name.
I used my domestic Janome to heavily free motion quilt each piece of the wall quilt".

 "This wall hanging is based on a design by Michele Hill, inspired by a William Morris pattern created in 1883.
The all-cotton fabrics have been hand appliqued and hand quilted by me".

"I started this quilt when all my children had left home and was suffering the empty nest syndrome.  It has been a UFO for some years and now finally finished.  The pattern is a Patchwork Pumpkin design.  

The quilt was hand embroidered and then machine quilted by me".

"I just love black and white and checks.  I had the outer borders for many years, they are a Mary Ellen Hopins design.
I used a template package for stars and decided on the colour design.
The quilt is mostly hand pieced and hand quilted".

"Nothing exciting here!  Simply using some of my stash collection.  Have, however, very much enjoyed the process and I am very happy with the result.

'Pleasures Found'

"I attended some classes in the 1990's but put the quilt aside for some years when I went back to work full time.  As I have now retired and with the encouragement of my sister I finished the quilt this year.  I loved doing the hand quilting but was glad when it was all sewn up and finished.  I could then start lots of new projects".

Was ever so taken with this cute little box of pink, yep, pink bobbins from Kim, one of the merchants at our Show, but just bowled over by the generosity of Inge who, when she spotted me sitting patting and playing with said bobbins, offered to fill them for me!  yeah! really!

Quilters really are the bestest folks!.  Thanks Inge, and when I finish these blog posts, guess what I will be spending time playing with .

Fair Excitement and a new Star

Yep, it was all fun and laughter at the Cottage as everyone was either putting in the finishing stitches on goodies for the Easter Fair or starting on new projects - some for the family - some for our Quilt Show.

Lyn is starting on her version of the 'Mayflowers' quilt by Joanne Ridley from her book 'Jelly Roll Inspirations'.   Many of our group have made their version of this captivating quilt, a number of which were on display at our 2013 Quilt Show.

The original pattern has the flowers cut from pieced yardage, that is 2.5" strips stitched into a wider strip, then using the flower template to cut a shape.  It's such a versatile pattern that flowers cut from yardage is just as pretty.  Lyn has chosen to use blanket stitch to applique the vliesofixed  flowers to her background, thoughts are perhaps a button center?

Pat is busily cutting Drunkards Path pieces from solid yardage in assorted colours, the background is a lovely soft grey, not lilac as is showing in the pic, in fact all the colours are a whole lot nicer than in the pic...it's a lighting thing..?  Pat explained the 'quilt to be' layout, can't wait to see more as it progresses.

Courtney, with tutoring from Mary, is piecing 2" scrappy squares to create one of those lovely Scottie dog toys.

Sandy is onto another block from her 'Sweet Daisy Dreams', a Robert Kaufman pattern.

Julie bought along her Hardanger piece, she has been working on it intermittently for a while now, and completion is just about within touching distance.

The pic on the right is manipulated to show you the beautiful stitching, trying to get cream or white to show nicely sometimes just doesn't work all that well...sigh...

Marguerite has almost finished her version of 'Leanne's House' , naming her quilt 'Happy Days' and using vibrant colours for another take on this wonderful pattern.  Marguerite bought her sandwich along to get a little help with the pinning. Now, just gotta quilt and bind it, oh yeah, and label it

Marguerite has chosen to embroider her label onto a piece of the backing fabric which will then disappear into the backing, just leaving the stitching visible, what a great idea!

Marguerite had an amazing Montmellick needlework caddy with her.  Created some time ago.  "wouldn't have the patience nowadays" was the comment.  Well patience or no, it is magnificent.

Marguerite has even embroidered her initals on the inside cover. (Bottom Left)

Now Wendy has been doing the whole 'one armed paper hanger' thing....being as busy as, she purchased this cupboard, padded up a larger piece of timber and created a large ironing surface, she then got her darling to create this gizmo and attach it to the cupboards side...

 ...a hanging rack!!, as you press your strips, you hang them over the rungs and keep everything in order!  and if that's not enough, the rack also folds down out of the way when not in use.

Don't know about you, but I'm voting this the 'bestest Gizmo evah'!!
Guessing there will be a few requests being made to some Darlings over this one.
Wendy has created this adorable wall hanging for the Easter Fair.  Just finishing up the binding.

Darn, another pic for the fuzzy collection.  But you get the picture...pun intended!
The fabrics are very similar to the ones in this quilt, a pic Wendy just happened to have on her new ipad.

Saving the best for last.

Sheila presented Wendy with one of our coveted 'Stars' for assembling our wonderful second prize raffle quilt "Cream Fantasy'

 

Beautiful, yes? and no, there is no difference in the creams, again, it's a lighting thing...or a camera thing, but never the photographer...
