2017 Quilt Exhibition - Part One

The show was a great success, lots of inspirational quilts were hung, and lots of visitors milling about, viewing, admiring, meeting old friends, catching up, just generally enjoying their visit to our wonderful Cottage.

Lyn Solomon
'Autumn'
Having won a minor prize in the Lyn Ballinger Challenge several years ago, these are the fabrics I bought with the prize money.
I love the rich colours and feel they exude warmth for a cold winters night in a comfy quilt. Disappearing nine parch is also one of my favourite patterns.
Quilted by Lyn Solomon.

Jules Williams
'Retro Brown'
A large trendy quilt made with left over retro style strips.
Just having some fun with left over strips from other projects!
Pattern Design by Jules Williams
Quilted by Letitia Turner

Marie Varley
'Stars and Boxes'
I made this quilt for my daughters 50th. birthday. It is a variation on a quilt by Carolyn Konig called 'Stars Hanging About'.
I used the Asian figures in the center copied from a decoration sent to me by a friend in Vietnam.
Quilted by Fiona Bell

Gwenyth Mitchell
'Gwenyth's Folly'
I started this quilt with dirty cream, mauve and purple. Changed to clearer colours and it all became a pickle!
Finally rescued with animal print
Quilted by Gwenyth Mitchell

Fae Dunner
'I Spy'
A comforter made with love for a traumatised child going into foster care.
"Something to keep" and to let them know they are precious to God.
Inspired by love of children.
Pattern design by Dianne Neumann and Tracey Scougall
Quilted by Fae Dunner

Sheila Tweedy
'Can You See The Face?'
Original design inspired by giant crossword on Pinterest. Fabrics are Canik Batiks 'Gemstones' given to me from the group several years ago. I also added some of my own hand dyed blue fabric.
The backing fabric was a 'must have' purchase.

Jackie Swan
'Tuffet'
I had been aware of tuffets being made in workshops and became interested. At the Brisbane Quilt Show in October 2015, I found Terri there selling kits. So home I came with a big box that I hid away in the house, thinking sometime later I will look at that. Then I became aware that Terri was coming to the coast to do a workshop, so I booked in. It took a full weekend and I am so happy with the results.
Thanks to Kimz Sewing and Patchwork - my tuffet is finished!
Worksho with Terri Ahrens

Sue Andrew
'Francie'
Hand pieced and machine quilted by me.
Quilted by Sue Andrew

Sandy King
'Buderim Belles'
I bought the embroidery blocks at a Quilt Show many years ago and finally finished them this year.
I used a single strand variegated thread for the embroidery and love the olde world look and style of the quilt
Pattern design by Sandy King
Quilted by Fiona - 'The Quilting Fairy'
Unfortunately the early morning light affected the photo badly, so some closer views of some of Sandy's beautiful stitches. - A

PIA, our new word...

Yep, over the W.I.P, the U.F.O. etc, Wendy has coined a new anacronym, PIA for Project/s In Action, she refuses to have a U.F.O, reckons that makes a project sound so unloved, whereas it may just be that it has slid down the slope, been overtaken, by the list of 'most pressing', 'most popular', 'prettiest' etc list, so PIA it is!
So, do you have a long list of P.I.A.'s?

Jane isn't fessing up to a long list of P.I.A.'s but she certainly is fessing up to 'too much stuff in my sewing space'. Eyeing off a rather largish stack of wools of all hues she decided to knit a knee rug, rather a large one, needing circular needles. Being rather pleased with the result she sailed forth and in the space of 7 weeks, created a total of 6 knee rugs, of all sizes, the latest one being the 7" squares she is holding in the pic below.
Jane bought along her 'squares' rug for a little advice on backing, she is off to colder climes in the near future and wanted some extra warmth. Of all the knee rugs she is keeping the squares, the others have zoomed off all over the world.

Val created two more charity quilts,
This one certainly drew its compliment of 'ohh's and 'ahh's
and this lovely all in greens and purples, a strip pieced Q.A.Y.G.

Gwen has finished her 'I Spy' version and bought it along to share, using a variation of Attic Windows with a little twist.

Lastly, if you are in our neck of the woods on Saturday 27th August, pop into our Atrium Open Day, promises to be as much fun as previous years.

2016 - really, what happened to 2015?

My goodness time just keeps marching along at an ever increasing pace, while feeling smug that it's a new year - lots of time ahead to organise oneself - some smartie pointed out that over 10% of the new year is gone!!! and some of us haven't got a start on yet!

Well, many of our group didn't let the grass grow underfoot over the break, as you will see, lots of projects started, and even more finished, but firstly we would all like to pay homeage to a lady who helped our Cottage run smoothly for many years.
Sadly Betty passed away over the Christmas break.  There will be a memorial service for her this Saturday 6th at 3p.m. in St. Marks Anglican Church - next door to the Cottage - to farewell Betty and to celebrate her life.
She was an amazing woman, meticulous in all she did. Betty did the most beautiful needlework and patchwork, a display of some of her pieces is now in the glass cabinet at the Cottage, thanks to Needlework Group leader Pam.  The photo in the cabinet was taken at the Patchwork afternoon tea to celebrate Betty's 90th Birthday a couple of years back.
Betty was our Cottage Treasurer for many years, she not only looked after the Cottage finances, keeping us in a sound state but also mentored many of the group treasurers, making sure that all was correct and balanced.  She also wore other hats while treasurer, rental officer and maintenance officer being just two of the extra jobs she did with such aplomb.  In fact, when Betty resigned as Treasurer, the Cottage had to call on 4 volunteers to fill the positions she had held.

Lyn and Sue W were having a good old catch up first day back, Sue working on an applique piece, part of an alphabet quilt.
Lyn was working on 2/3rds of a quilt that will eventually be for a special someone.  A design rework of 'May Flowers' a pattern from one of our library magazines.
Lyn opted to strip piece the alternate blocks as opposed to the flowers, prefering instead to use the border fabric as the flower centers, fussy cutting some and leaving the others to chance.
As Lyn said, some lost their heads, some their tails but some worked out perfectly, like the lime cat in the lime flower - cute!
Lyn used a Q.A.Y.G. method in three pieces that she is now joining together and bordering.

Marlene is still working on her paper pieced blocks, got half of them done so far, looking foreward to seeing the final creation.  Beryl is involved in a group quilt, everyone making a block topped with a layer of crystal organza. Makes for some interesting stitching.

Jackie has been inspired to do a 'Jacks Chain' design using some of her Kaffe Fassett fabric stash while Marlene looks thoughtfully on, inspiration??  working out a simpler way??

Courtney has made a start on her new embroidery piece - well 3 pieces really, fresh out of the packaging to begin a new year.

It seems that needlework is the current rage, some to be used in quilts, some not.
Sandy is working on a 'Red Brolly' design, Inge is taking a break from that ever increasing pile of hexies while Heather and Stella are playing with thread, yep that is Stella's armies being held captive there, Karen is working on beautiful stitcheries that will find themselves in another of her quilts and new member Rita is doing some white on white embroidery.
So, what is the story with Heather and Stella?
Well you remember that georgeous crazy patchwork piece Michell did last year?
Heather has been bitten by the crazy bug and is taking a crazy class to create her version in white with jewel tone threads, ribbons, buttons.....

We have had a few crownings lately, Fae was crowned as Miss Prolific, a hard earned title for bringing along two finished charity quilts last week...
and another one this week.  Wow!!, she is really giving that new sewing machine a work out!

Lainey has been crowned - literally - as Queen of the Scrappy -
This she tells us is the last strip Q.A.Y.G quilt she is going to make, yeah, right!, anyway, not being one to waste any size fabric offcut (not a scrap in Lainey's eyes) she had all these funny shaped bits left over from squaring up the Q.A.Y.G. blocks, so what to do? well make a ipad pouch of course, complete with cute button tab, or you could call it a crown...if you want to...(Sheila had to hold it up, kept falling over Laineys eyes...)

Debby had a great find at the Needlework 'Bring and Buy', this lovely tapestry barely begun, lots of work for Debby to continue with.

Talk about the never ending story, Lyn was doing a fair imitation with her Christmas table runner story.
Lyn bought a table runner pattern at the Quilt and Craft show last year and made table runners for all her family members, just like the one she is showing us here.
You would think that would be the end of it wouldn't you...but no.

One daughter reminded Mum, 'My table is square", so a square runner had to be created, still using the basic pattern.
Lyn was a wee tad taken with the square runner and ran herself
up a version.
But of course, you can't have Christmas runners on the table
all year round - the answer?

Another version.
Talk about getting value from a pattern.

Gwen is taking a little break from quilting and becoming more involved in her needlework, she started this lovely by doing just one block to see how she went, fell in love with it and went on to create this beautiful runner.

Val kept herself busy over the break, she created these 4 flimseys for charity quilts using a combination of donated fabric and orphan blocks. They will be quilted by other group members.

Pat bought this adorable little girls quilt along to share with us, its for her Grandaughter.
The pattern was purchased at the Quilt and Craft show last year, but sorry, don't know who's pattern it is.
Machine appliqued and F.M.Quilted.  Pat shared that she lowered her machine speed and just took her time with the applique.  A beautiful quilt for a special lady.  Pat used the cute bumble bee fabric shown at the pic. bottom for the backing.

Janice is our Afternoon tea co-ordinator, to keep our napkins tidy she made us a couple of these.
Napking holders, pretty and practical.  Thank you Janice, it's nice to have the napkins nicely waiting and not blowing around.

Lastly, a pic for those who have asked about out darling little Ollie.  He is doing great, blitzes his medical checkups and tests.  He started crawling the same day he got his oxygen tube removed and is off like a rocket, has no patience with staying still with his feeds, Mum has to trail him around making sure everything is well or Olls just drags the whole kit and kaboodle along behind him.  He is almost 18 months old now, the world is his oyster and he is having a darn good chew on it.
This was taken a couple of days after the family moved into their new digs, yep the lawn has been mown since and yep, Olls is all over it!

A Fond Farewell and a Welcome to Newbies

Spotted Sheila hanging this balloon on the way into the Cottage, gotta know something is up...

Di was surrounded by a group of gals all admiring this great wall hanging.
Sandy and Di spotted the pattern for the Advent Calendar at the recent Brisbane Craft Show and judged it perfect, all that was missing were decorations for the little heart shaped pockets, and that's when they spotted the buttons, lots of lovely wonderful buttons.  Bliss!  It wasn't long however until they realised just how those button dollars were adding up and was perhaps a little a lot on the side of over capitalising for a Christmas wall hanging so settled for some really lovely glittery velcroed christmas motifs.
Di's own design modification is the addition of tinsy little wooden pegs she has numbered for the advent dates.

New member Nelly is working on her own design of appliqued poppies on a pieced backgound.
Nelly likes to up-cycle and has the eye to get a lot of her fabrics and pieces from various local op-shops.
The flower stalks are couched heavy threads and Nelly has used a combination of freemotion embroidery and beads for the poppies and leaves.

Courtney arrived sporting an eye catching bag, actually a lunch bag but such lovely vibrant colours and constructed from that wonderful invention of foam backed fabric that one often sees beer coolers constructed from...have heard a rumor that the beer coolers are made from leftover bits from making wet suits, can't vouch for that though!
Other bags spotted were this tote in a lovely poppies fabric and a blue toile sewing compendium.

Back in 2013 our group visited the QAGOMA 'Quilts 1700-1945 Exhibition' at which Wendy managed to snaffle a copy of the book 'The Rajah Quilt',  no mean feat as copies were in very short supply!  So when Wendy spotted this pattern by quilter Lessa Siegel she decided on making her own 'Rajah Quilt'
Wendy has opted to use a modern twist and pencil in the tiny designs of the central medallion while needle turning the other blocks.
After winning the Expertise Events 'Rajah Award' Lessa Siegele was inspired to create her own version of the Rajah quilt, albeit a much smaller version.  Lessa was then encouraged to sell the pattern of her version.
The Rajah quilt is one of, if not the most important Australian textile artifact and has had many interesting articles writted about it and the convicts credited with it's creation.
Some interesting links are:
'Stitches in Time' an Australian article
Rajah's Grandaughter - a blog by a 7th generation decendent of a Rajah convict
Lessa Siegel's story by 'Addicted to Fabric' blogger Brenda Wood
a story of Lessa Siegls pattern release by Michell Hill
all very interesting reading.

Marcia was busily trying to put the finishing stitches into the binding of this sweetie, destined to fly away to Sweden in the near future, but she kept getting sidetracked.
A 'Star of the Month' award, for so many many reasons, not the least of was the great job done as our Cottage Rental Officer and group deputy leader while Sheila has been away.

Roslyn came along to join us for the day, a very new newbie and planning her very first quilt.  Roslyn was given a few lessons on the importance of ironing and accurate cutting by Pat and Sue.

Mary has been working away on her lovely blocks, applique, needle turn, couching and embroidery, a real smorgasboard of needle crafting.

Julie was a bit shy to share her WIP, being just a few lines to practice on.  Well that's fine, but a few lines of what??  No, not Hardanger.
Slowly the story emerges, and we get a tinsy glimpse of what Julie is aiming to achieve.
Punto Antico.
You can read all about it here at Nordic Needle.
Julie has ordered a book and is working through it, just because she wanted a bit of a challenge -  like Hardanger isn't a challenge?
Helen decided to hit the net to show just what all the excitement is about.
It seems that Gwen is also learning Punto Antico.

Now have you noticed those white LED lights the girls have? they are like rabbits, really they were all over the place, its a Triumph Desktop Magnifying Lamp, ( Thanks Di) tracked them down to a Janome sewing center in Everton Park and guess what? they also come in black, pink and purple but wait, there's more, (chanelling a T.V. shopping ad.) it's freight included, and on sale at $33 was the best price I could find, mine will be here day after tomorrow....service plus! can't wait.  Been on the lookout for something like this for ages. Thanks Gals.

Betty is feeling both hot and smug, yep the temp was up there today but Betty had a head start with a very cute Chinese fan.

Lorraine shared her latest finish, a double sashed H.S.T. lovely that Lorraine will be giving to charity.
The backing is as stunning as the front of the quilt.

Now where is Sheila off to???

Yep, It's cake and song for Marcia

Could be it's one of those Big '0' birthdays

Sadly, Jenny, one of our Thursday night gals and a co-author of this blog has decided that she isn't able to be a part of our group any longer.  Jenny has a very busy career teaching 'Crazy' at various local quilting stores, writing quilting books on crazy patchwork and is of course author of her own blog Sew So Crazy.
Thank you Jenny for the input to our blog of all the work done by our 'Thursday-nighters'.
