Busy Ladies with wonderful quilts to show

Thursday night saw a small but very busy group meeting with 13 ladies present.  June kept some of the group busy making the 22 charm square bag and also helping Heather with a panel quilt, while others of the group were busy working on their paper piecing projects.

Show and Tell saw some lovely quilts being displayed.
Dianne with her Japanese Quilt top. Showcasing a center medallion and other fabrics with an innovative sashed layout

Elaine with her sashed quarter square triangle quilt.  Elaine used a Moda 'Garden Party' layer cake and jelly roll to create this lovely quilt and had Fiona quilt it for her.

Leanne with her flimsey 'Nostalgia', Leanne found this pattern in a back issue of Aust. Patchwork and Quilting.

June showing her latest 'Hidden Wells' quilt.  June incorporated folded and gathered flowers in her borders and pieced her binding.
Thank you Marlene and Maureen for the lovely pics and report.  - A

Hand Pieced Kite, Bags and Hexies

Thursday night girls were treated to some lovely show and tell and thanks to Lorraine and her pics we can also enjoy the goodies.

Jenny C. brought along her beautiful 'Kite' shaped scrappy quilt.  This gorgeous quilt was hand paper pieced and hand quilted - mostly at Rugby matches and travelling whilst Jenny was watching her son play.  There is a possibility of a workshop in the future to show us all the technique.

A closer view of those beautiful fabrics and neat  points.

Jenny was also working on her new bag made out of those gorgeous tiny hexagons!  Her bag is made of Kaffe Fasset fabrics, and here it is laid out on the bag pattern.

Jane was also working on her bag of the tiny hexagons - here she is with her one made in Japanese fabrics.

Elaine has made a great bag using a left over 'golf lady' panel, and she is taking it off to golf on Friday for a raffle.

Debbie loved the tutorial Janet showed us on how to make the needle holders, that she made this beautiful one for Jane for her Birthday.  Debbie added lovely pearls and beautiful lace and embroidery work.  Very pretty.

Following the tutorial given by Jenny C. some months ago on how to make the great little patchwork bags - whenever our group gets together we see them popping up on the tables with our notions inside - they are so sweet, and every one is different!
Thank you for sharing the Thursday night meeting with us Lorraine.

Quillo Workshop

Well, I don't know, was it something in the air?, the change of season? excitement at gearing up for our Biennale Quilt Show?........whatever the reason, there was a lot of laughter at the cottage today.
Wendy found a need to reverse stitch after not quite mastering the very difficult art of laying fabric right sides together.

We had the talented duo of Sue and Janet tutoring a quillo workshop, Sue gave us this rather useful tip, how to closely snip off the corners without chopping through the stitching line

Place your thumb nail on the stitching line and snip off the offending corners, short of cutting off your thumb your stitching is safe.
Elaine took a break from the workshop to show off her striking stack and slash quilt, made for one of the men in her family.
Julie brought her Hardanger along to admire and be admired. Some days it's all about the company not the stitching.

Some of the Needlework girls did a workshop on knitting little beaded bags, as you see Gwen took a real liking to the art, here she is on her 3rd, Julie's holding one up for the camera and one on the table

Fay had the ultimate in UFO's for the day. Her baby blanket started 15years ago!
She bought it along to get an update on her crochet skills from Dorothy, who is also a member (Leader) of the Spinners and Weavers group.
Wendy, pleased to have finished her Quillo,

Marion, up on a visit to her sis Sue, felt she needed just one more thing to stuff into her cases to fly home tomorrow, what better that a quillo?

Judy showing Sheila how she plans to quilt her quillo, echo quilting around the sleeping bear, isn't this just the cutest?
hope you can see the stitching in this close up

Early in the lesson, quillo pocket made, but oh dear........forgot to change the bobbin cotton, it wasn't a real good match but gee, on the inside who will see???

Elaine with her finished quillo, auditioning the cars she will applique on the outside of the pocket/cushion.
Lyn and her finished quillo.

Afternoon Tea was yum as usual, the apricot cake was a real hit and Maree very kindly gave us the recipe.

Apricot Loaf:

Place in a bowl
1 cup All-bran
1 cup chopped apricots
1 cup brown sugar
1tablespoon honey
1 cup milk
Allow to stand and soak overnight or for a few hours.

Next morning add
1 cup Self Raising Flour,
Place in Loaf Tin and bake in moderate over (180 deg) until lightly browned and cake springs back when lightly pressed on top.

Chippies:
60grms butter
50grm packet potato chips lightly crushed
1/2 cup plain flour
90 grams sharp cheddar cheese
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
a good pinch cayenne pepper

Melt butter, cool slightly. Add remaining ingredients and mix well.
Roll heaped teaspoons full of mixture into balls and placve on a lightly greased tray and flatten with a fork. Bake in a moderate oven 180 - 190 degrees for 15 - 20 minutes.

Thanks for this recipes Maree, I'll try it out on the Darling this weekend.
Addition: I did try that fruit cake, boy what a hit!, visitors enjoyed it so much we got an invite to the pub for lunch. Thank you again Maree.

Heather with her finished quillo, would this be for a Grandie Heather?

Marion, gazing lovingly at her finished quillo, or just wondering about packing it?

End of the Day and the Talented Duo just couldn't stop laughing, or was it Sue trying to picture Marion packing that suitcase with just one more thing...........

Thank you very much Sue and Janet for a wonderful day and a great workshop, only one slacker didn't finish her quillo, but I was busy with the camera now wasn't I?..........

'Just love Purple'.......

this was the comment from Elaine, the maker of this stunning purple quilt, when asked for her story at Show and Tell yesterday, it is destined for her own bedroom even though it means that the feature wall has to be repainted, no doubt a job for Hubby.

Elaine purchased the main fabrics, the three purples featured in the heart blocks in Tamworth, she then saw the quilt pattern on the cover of the quilting magazine, APQ, and the rest as they say is history.
Elaine has very kindly agreed to allow us to hang her quilt in our up coming Biennale Quilt Show later in the year. Thanks to Picasa, a closer view of the purple heart.

This quilt with the brighter pastel colours is for Lyn's very new little Granddaughter Dana. The nursery is decorated in mauves and this quilt will star very nicely.
Love this quilt to bits, such simple lines and beautiful fabrics combine to produced a stunning quilt.

What do you do with Selvedges??

Well, you could make a scarf, or maybe a bag, or go really off the planet and follow Jodie from Ric Rac, into the world of upholstery. Yep, she upholstered a chair.

This girl is so talented, go view her chair on http://vintagericrac.blogspot.com/2009/03/not-so-big-but-kinda-more-technical.html and while you are there check out the beautiful selvedge dress that she made for her daughter.

To keep an eye on what Jodie gets up to check out the link to 'Ric Rac' in the side bar under the section titled 'Blogs you may find interesting', scroll down to Ric Rac and click.

Off to post the rest of your pics from yesterday.
Enjoy!
