An old U.F.O. becomes a current W.I.P

Amazing how many U.F.O's are seeing the light of day lately, this latest was unearthed by Sue W from way back in 2006.

Started in a workshop with Lorraine Carthew this beauty is getting close to finished.

Lorraine's class was in raw edge applique, but Sue decided to fall back on her preferred method of blanket stitching.

Sheila is working to a plan for the future, for a friends next big '0' birthday.  Using some shasiko pieces she has been saving,

along with some lovely blue and white fabric she purchased on her trip to Japan, she has created this lovely.

Sheila was busily slicing scraps into usable sized pieces.

with a view to making these lovely improv blocks.

Jackie is busily stitching arcs into rows that will become another stunner.

Di had a basket of goodies, shasiko goodies that is, she is up to piece number 5 so far.

Sue A is recently returned from visiting family, and of course took along a piece to work on, "well because you do don't you!" Sue was telling us that it was the perfect piece because it took quite a bit of gazing and considering to decide on just what was needed and where.  Very relaxing.  Sue isn't entirely sure of what she will use this piece for but is thinking, perhaps a bag?

An unusual Bargello and more...

Sheila and Lorraine went shopping and met some lovely ladies  at 24 Richardson St, Pacific Paradise, limited times of Mon 9a.m. - 4p.m. and Sat 9a.m. - 1p.m.

 Loads of bargains, and not such a drive, approx 10mins from the Cottage.  Make an adventure of the day and grab a coffee at 'Picnic' stroll through the park to sit and gaze out to Mudjimba Island from the beachside viewing platform

The top section has a kangaroo & Pocket.
The lower section is from a crossword puzzle. It is for my dear friend Ruth Blom who turns 99 in December and the kangaroo reminds her of when she lived next door to me and kangaroos would visit.

 The reverse is made of flannel with a secret heart pocket"

They're back...

...in spades, yep Hexies were everywhere on show today,

Karen was slicing around a template, well when she wasn't chatting that is, she told us of a little project she has under wraps using 1/4" hexies!! Ankie reckoned that Hexies that small should be glued down, just for security like, a few nods of agreement on that one!

Jackie presented a workshop on these little beauties,Somerset Patchwork Trivets.

They are an oldie but a goodie, Buderim Patchwork gals had a workshop on these a few years back, there were quite a few offered for sale at the Christmas Fair, and yep, snaffled a few, they are fantastic for the table.

Marlene spotted this panel at a Quilt Show and just had to have it, those eyes are captivating, Marlene isn't sure if he is giving her the 'come hither' look or the 'Hmm, a snack' look. He really is a beautiful boy.

Pat is has been a busy gal, 3 flimseies bought along for Lorraine I. to practice her long arm quilting and turn these charmers into lovely quilts for our Charity Quilt Stash.

Sue W. was spied stitching these lovelies, can't wait to see what she turns them into.

2017 Quilt Exhibition - Part Five

Our Cottage is holding the Annual Buderim Winter School this week, so no Patchwork meeting for us--sob sob.
To help us all over the disappointment, here are the last of the Exhibition quilts, but before we zoom down the lines of lusciousness, there are more Very Very Big THANK YOU's to Sue Andrew and her team of helpers for the splendid job they did setting up the exhibition and Wendy Tame and her team of helpers for their equally splendid job running the kitchen and suppyling the delicious eats, without these hard workers the Exhibition would not be the success it was.

Fabric Art, Surface Design, Paper and Fibre Group
The girls from Fibre Art have an exhibition every second year, same as we do, but as the exhibitions are on alternate years the Fiber Arts gals display our annual Lyn Ballinger Challenge at their exhibition and we display their Group Challenge at our exhibition, a great system that suits us all, mind you, over the years these talented ladies have increased the types of mediums they work with and so of course their group's name has also had to expand, encompasing all their many talents

2017 Group Challenge
This year the groups challenge was to contribute to an instillation based on the theme'Seasons'.
Each member had to create leaves or flowers in their chosen medium. These were then used to construct a work which could be used as a window pelment or wall hanging.
The finished work is a credit to the 30 members who contributed. All materials were hand dyed and handmade. Mediums used include, felt, silk, cotton and paper.

Our Mystery Quilt.
On a visit to a local sister quilting group's exhibition many of our members were taken with the display of a mystery quilt the Mooloolah Valley quilters had done, they proudly displayed their quilts on stage showing off the many variations derived from the one pattern. Our members present promptly elected Wendy to co-ordinate and organise a quilt for our group to create, luckily she agreed, mind you, we did get her to say the words 'I agree' before we fessed up to what she had agreed to. Wendy did a stirling job, from a rough sketch of a block given to her by a 'Pinterest' surfing group member she wrote the assembly directions and even gave us a couple of block layout options and quilt sizes. Wendy also decided to make the directions 2.5" strip friendly for those of us wanting to use a jelly roll as well as being easy for those who wanted to do a scrappy quilt. These are the amazing results, we all had a ball creating our quilts. Thank You Wendy, for all of your hard work.

Mystery for a Service Person
Wendy created a mystery quilt for us to tackle. I found this bundle of gorgeous fabrics from the same fabric range in my cupboard. They had been there for awhile and there was no pattern, no notes or no picture of what they were for.
Because of the different amounts of each fabric with several of the fabrics being the same amount it looked as though I had bought it for a purpose. Well, life gets in the way sometimes and the purpose of these fabrics is long gone. I decided to use them for the mystery quilt then made extra blocks. It will be sent to a person serving somewhere overseas for Australia under the Aussie Hero Quilt program. I hope that someone gets good use from it and knows that they are thought of for the work they are doing for me and everyone else. There is also a matching laundry bag to go with the quilt so it will be easy to find their clean clothes when they come back on the trailer.

It's all about the small and the busy...

While we were drooling over Wendy's fabric choices, someone mentioned a lovely little quilt that has been creating quite a fuss in the quilting world for some time now, Jen Kingwall's 'My Small World'. 
Marcia immediately popped up this pic on her ipad for us to wonder at and drool over...

Yep, her very talented daughter Leanne has created her version of 'My Small World'.  You can pop over to Leanne's blog and see her pic of this wonderful quilt.  Leanne is yet to quilt her top but if you subscribe to her blog no doubt you will be able to see the finished quilt in the near future, after all, it is listed on her 100 days to finish challenge!

Chatting about finishing...

Karen was snapped last Thursday night, finishing her reels of thread holder, a U F O of 18 years.  Gotta love a finish.

Marie V. shared this innovative Q.A.Y.G, I Spy quilt with us, wonky log cabins, with the cutest prints at the center, alternated with diagonal strip blocks.

Marie's design gave Patricia a lightbulb moment, she has some nice little prints herself that she would love to use, this design is just perfect!

Courtney is making great progress with her table runner, getting a little guidance here from Mary. 

Some of the gals have been tripping around on boats, large boats, well cruise ships really, and having a wonderful time of it if these eye glasses are anything to go by.

Sue W, who just loves applique, created a this wallhanging for a special friend living over in W.Aus. 

Posted off before it could be shared with us, Sue was delighted to receive this pic from her friend, who couldn't believe her luck when she walked into the LQS and spotted the perfect hanger.

Susie A, one of those who has been floating about, took a piece of her beautiful hand dyed fabric with her to create her entry into the Fiber Arts group challenge of course couldn't take a pic of the entire WIP- that would be giving too much away to the Fiber Art gals, but did manage to get some snips of the lovely fabric.

Sue, who used to have her own fabric dyeing business will be presenting a fabric dyeing class to our group in May.  Really looking forward to seeing some beautiful creations.

Marcia, was busily putting the finishing stitches into the binding on this very special quilt.

For her Grandaughters new baby.  Yep Marcia is going to be a Great Granny!!!, not once but twice!!

Yes, two of her Grandaughters are expecting bubbies this year......oooh, can't begin to tell you of the envy around the table when that topic popped up!

The handle threads through two loops for an easy closure, when not in use the entire carrier lays flat for storage, could even do double duty as a table runner?

Sheila had a 'memory lane' pic to share with us, she took 3 of her Granddaughters to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane a few weeks ago, she took their dads there about 40 years ago.
