2017 Quilt Exhibition - Part Three

Wow, what an amazing afternoon of exuberance and energy at our patchwork meeting yesterday, even Di got a tad carried away when dishes time came around, she had more suds than she knew what to do with!

But more on the day of fun and inspiration later, now, on to more delicious quilts.

'Happy Memories'
Prior to the birth of her baby last year my granddaughter held a 'Celebration of a new life' party.
Guests were asked to bring a piece of fabric that held happy memories for them and to share their memories with the other guests.
To surround the new baby with these happy new vibes the pieces of fabric were to be made into a patchwork quilt by the baby's great grandmother.
With such a wide variety of fabrics this was a big challenge for great grandmother, Marcia.

When I saw Lib Elliot's quilt on the internet, I knew I had to make it. Lots of triangles and using blacks, greys and just one very bright colour. Watching it slowly come together on my design wall, I thought I should never have started such a complicated design. But then I finally finished the piecing!
How do I quilt such a pattern? straight lines with a difference; I let the pattern dictate the quilted design. I used my walking foot and four colours of thread for the quilting.

I started collecting brown fabrics about 7 years ago to make a quilt for my middle son, however, being very time poor I hadn't got around to starting the quilt until approximately 3 years ago. By then, my son had become engaged and so I was planning to have the quilt finished as part of our wedding present to our son and his new bride
Dan & Gen we married on May 31st 2017. I finally finished the quilt and gave it to them approximately 3 years later on February 29th 2017.
The great news is - they absolutely love it, so I guess it was worth waiting for!

'Are They Really All Stripes?'
I found this pattern in a magazine from the U.K.
The quilt designer, Lynne Goldsworthy, had made this quilt using different shades of the same colour in each block and when I went looking for similar fabric, I found that I had all these stripes so went for that insead.
There are not really 36 different stripe fabrics but you can have a hunt for the odd one out.
I enlarged the quilt and changed the sashing colour

I just love scrappy quilts. For me, its what patchwork is all about. The use of scraps of left over fabric, some recycled from clothes that have been grown out of. Snips of this and that. This quilt is predominantly out of leftovers, however the reverse and large peices of this particular quilt were purchased specially.
I made this quilt for my third childs 21st birthday as a surprise. He loves it.
When he comes back from travelling there's nothing more he enjoys than snuggling down underneath it.

My quilt is made up of 7056 one inch finished squares. One of my friends makes childrens' clothes and she gave me a lot of fabric scaps so I combined these with all of my scrap fabrics plus my stash. I have been able to make a Queen size quilt!

This quilt began as a bagful of ties collected over a number of years from family, friends and second hand stores. There are silk and synthetic ties but all with beautiful colours and patterns. What previous life did they have? How to give them a second life, a new life?
The gift of a book called 'Recycle Ties' by Christine Copenhaver was the inspiration to make this bold quilt from just striped ties.

2016 was my year of Crazy! I was inspired by my friend's Crazy patchwork and encouraged to attend classes at The Patchwork Angel with tutor Jenny Clauston.
With Jenny's expert guidance and with the help of her excellent book 'Foolproof Crazy Patchwork' the pieces you see here magically evolved! I had done lots of embroidery in the past but had never worked with twisted silk thread, silk ribbon or beading. I loved the whole creative experience.
Then came the decision of what to do when the pieces were finally finished - is Crazy patchwork ever really finished? You can always add a bit more!
I decided to make three framed pieces, one for each of my three children to be given to them in the future.

I have been fascinated by the original Rajah Quilt made by convicts in 1840 on their voyage to Australia and when I saw the pattern (half size of original) I just had to make it. The centre block is a copy of the original only I coloured it then outlined it in stitches. The quilt is then built up of rows around the centre. There are many very tiny squares

Originally, when I started this quilt it was for myself. I have combined my love of needlework with patchwork and I was half way into it, when one of my daughters spotted it and decided she loved it and asked if she could have it.
How could I say no? To have one of my own children ACTUALLY wanting one of my quilts was wonderful, so I completed and gave it to her for her 21st birthday. Which actually started the ball rolling, how could I give to one and not them all? This is the first of 3 very similar but different quilts. It is machine pieced and quilted and I embroidered by hand all the squares, using a mixture of Mount Mellick stitchery, candlewicking and other embroidery stitches. It certainly was a work of love, and my daughter has used it on her bed for the last 15 years, hence its 'used' look. I have made a second quilt, similar but different for my second daughter, plus 2 other quilts for each of my sons, I am still in the process of making one of my own. One day!

The 'Ring Circle Quilt' was shown to me on the internet so I drafted out a similar pattern. As the body is made up of the squares, hexagons and triangles, ti was a challente to 'fill in' around the edge of the quilt.

2017 Quilt Exhibition - Part One

The show was a great success, lots of inspirational quilts were hung, and lots of visitors milling about, viewing, admiring, meeting old friends, catching up, just generally enjoying their visit to our wonderful Cottage.

Having won a minor prize in the Lyn Ballinger Challenge several years ago, these are the fabrics I bought with the prize money.
I love the rich colours and feel they exude warmth for a cold winters night in a comfy quilt. Disappearing nine parch is also one of my favourite patterns.

I had been aware of tuffets being made in workshops and became interested. At the Brisbane Quilt Show in October 2015, I found Terri there selling kits. So home I came with a big box that I hid away in the house, thinking sometime later I will look at that. Then I became aware that Terri was coming to the coast to do a workshop, so I booked in. It took a full weekend and I am so happy with the results.

Down to the wire...

Wednesday was a day of fluff and flurry, the big job of ferrying quilts of all sizes along to be signed in for the exhibition, every item has to be registered, checked off, sorted and stacked

as you see, Lorraine and Karren had everyone under controll while other helpers stacked the quilts in their appropriate piles.

Just a few of the many wonderful items you will have the fun of viewing and purchasing come tomorrow.

Today (Thursday) is 'set up' day, and as I type, gals are working hard to turn the Cottage into an Alladins cave of wonderful goodies and visual treats. Sheila has sent a couple of pics of the set up so far,
The raffle ticket table is always one of the first corners to be set up, those two quilts are stunning, again a very big thank you to New Zealand quilter and tutor Joyce Jones for donating her pattern "Mikasa Sukasa' to us to create our version 'Weroona', and of course the gratitude and thanks of all group members for the creators of these two amazing quilts.

Just chatted with Pat, she is busy hanging at the cottage, hanging quilts that is... she mentioned that they are running out of room, wondered aloud if perhaps the ceiling would have to be used...
Promises an abundance of works for you to drool over.

Counting down...just days to our Biennial Quilt Exhibition...

and it showed at the last meeting, gals running on high octane, busy, busy, busy. Lots of lovely quilts getting the last stitches in bindings, fussing over seams, pressing and making sure everything is schmick. This is going to be a fantastic quilt exhibition and sale, so if you are in our neck of the woods on the 23rd, 24th, or 25th June make sure you pop in, say hiya, have a cuppa, and feed your soul with the beauties within the Cottage, perhaps even buy yourself a little something to take home and pet, either one of the many crafted goodies our group will have on sale or something from one of the traders stalls.

Ailsa breathed a sigh of relief on finishing the binding of this cutie, some beautiful Japanese florals in this deciptively simple looking quilt.

Di had her version of the Mystery Quilt, freshly finished for inclusion in the Exhibition. Our group was inspired by a display at one of our local sister patchwork groups, the ladies from Mooloolah Valley Quilters had done a mystery quilt as a group, it was a visual treat to see all the different effects achieved by different colour palets and placements, we were so inspired that we elected Wendy to run our version of a Mystery Quilt to be displayed at our Exhibition, can't wait to see them all lined up.

Marie was spotted at the beginning of the quilt creation process, cutting beautiful fabrics for yet another 'William Morris' quilt.
Being the super organised and talented lass that she is, all her exhibition quilts are finished and ready to roll.

Now I have a tale to tell on this beauty, Sue W. who does beautiful needleturn with the tinsiest stitches was sorta muttering about 'I reckon this will be my last needleturn'...well I have heard those words fall from her mouth before, in fact if I remember rightly it was just before the last quilt exhibition...so Suz, just start planning the next one.

Now as is our wont, we have the Cottage display cabinet full of delicious little patchwork goodies this month to coincide with our quilt exhibition, and Karen has two more cuties in the display, so lots of visual treaties if you visit our show, oh and of course, lots of treaties for your tummy too, arvo teas and delish sangers are to be had for a very reasonable amount.

2017 Buderim Patchwork Group Quilt Show and Sale

Well, it's less than 1 month before our Biennial Quilt Show and Sale, whew, lots of gals have worked very hard over the past months to make sure that the Quilt Show is just as wonderful as always. There has been an amazing array of quilts and smaller quilted goodies shared within the group both for display and sale at the Show, so you, our many visitors, are in for a real treat.

The show will be held at the Buderim Craft Cottage, 5 Main Street, Buderim on Friday 23rd June to Sunday 25th between the hours of 9a.m. and 4p.m. Entry is $5 and there will be traders tables as well as our own goodies for sale. Refreshments with complimentary tea or coffee will also be available.

Our raffle quilts this year are very special. First we have 'Weerona' (Aboriginal for resting place) featuring some truly beautiful aboriginal print fabrics. The pattern - with a little mathamatical tweeking from Sheila - is based on renowned New Zealand quilter Joyce Jones pattern 'Mikasa Sukasa'. Joyce very kindly donated her pattern to us and also suggested the use of aboriginal prints in the design. Thank you very much Joyce for your genorosity and support, it is greatly appreciated by our group.

'Weeroona' was created by Marie and the binding was stitched by Lorraine

Our second raffle quilt is 'Purple Passion', created by Janice with Beryl stitching the binding. Janice was inspired by a Christine Cohrs pattern 'Pinwheel Delight' from a back issue of Down Under Quilts.

Raffle tickets are available at the Buderim Craft Cottage Atrium Gallery, our community information center, the Buderim Old Post Office and of course will be on sale at the exhibition for only $2.00 per ticket.
Proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets will be going to our charity of choice Smart Pups assistance dogs a Sunshine Coast based charity providing assistance dogs to children with special needs.
