Lecture, Donations and More on the Hexie Front

Lots of pride and excitement at today's meeting.  Pat (who worked hard at organising and keeping track of all the tickets and $$$'s for the quilt raffle) along with Sheila were rather tickled to present a cheque for $2,250.00 to Cittamani Hospice.

The lovely Jill from Cittamani was on hand to accept the cheque and to share with us the 'Cittamani Story' along with  the aims and services that are available to our Sunshine Coast locals.
Of course, like so many vital charities and services, the government funding is rather sparse on the ground, as Jill mentioned, it barely covers half the expenses so public support is essential for them to continue their work.  So everyone who bought a ticket, or two, or ten, take a bow, job well done.

The Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Sunshine Coast or ADFAS had invited Australian Quilt Historian Dr. Annette Gero to present a lecture in the Memorial Hall, just across the lawn from our Cottage, well of course we had to go!
ADFAS Chairwoman Helen Milne with Dr. Annette Gero, posing for the official photographer.

Dr. Gero had bought along some of her collection of antique quilts, some so fragile that you were careful about breathing too closely.  Sadly we were asked not to take pics of the quilts, so of course I didn't, however, the quilts on display are in Dr Gero's book 'The Fabric of Society' and as you probably remember, we have a copy in our library, donated by Gwen if memory serves me well.

Various methods of construction were used in the quilts, one being the use of printed medallion centers, (such as in the quilt behind Helen and Dr. Gero above) as well as Broderie Perse using beautiful chintz fabrics.
Hexies seem to figure rather predominately in a lot of our heritage quilts, as is the case today.  There was one modern hexie quilt in particular that had a rather interesting story, the creator attended Dr. Gero's lecture a couple of years back and was so taken with one quilt in particular, she came home and created her own version, yep, you guessed it, Jenny shared her quilt with the other visitors to the lecture.

This pic, is the reverse side of a very old Wagga, bought along by one of the guests, who told the story of a young girl's knitted yellow dolls scarf being collected up and sewn into the Wagga, the front of the Wagga is in great condition, made from woolen Men's suiting samples.
This is from another guest's quilt, the owner shared her memories of this quilt living on her Aunties bed for many years, she also reminded us, that in days gone by, there was none of this business of gentle machine wash, nope, popped into the copper or into the bath tub and stomped around!
As was the custom of English and early Australian quilts, they were not bound, that was an American version of finishing your quilt, the English way was to fold the quilt front and backing into a seam and slip stitch along. The pink stripe is where the front of the quilt folds over to meet the backing.

Finally, just couldn't resist showing you this, it's a reminder of the Trunk Show on Thursday night, how prettily presented.  Hope you can make it!

2013 Quilt Show Winners

One of the big thrills of a Quilt Show of course is guessing who the winners will be.  Our group has chosen not to have a 'Judged' winner but to have all our visitors vote for the quilt they like best.
Our  Quilt Show Viewers Choice winner is Gwen for her amazing quilt 'Venetian Floor'
Gwen was presented with a Gift Voucher to spend at Patchwork Angel and the perpetual trophy of a quilt stand.
There is a lovely story behind the quilt stand.  Part of our Group meet in each others homes for an extra dose of stitchin' 'n' goss, they call themselves the 'Bossies', or more formally 'The Bossy Stitchers' (and each and every one of them agree, yes, everyone else in the group is....)
Janet was also a member of the Bossies, and in her memory the girls decided to donate a perpetual trophy of a quilt stand for the Quilt Show Viewers Choice Winner, a lovely way to keep alive the memory of such a popular and giving lady who is so sadly missed.

Penny and Janet's Darling John, presenting Gwen with her winners certificate, a lovely gift voucher to spend at Patchwork Angel, and of course the new Quilt Stand Perpetual Trophy.

The Bossies were there to help present the trophy to Gwen, except for Marlene who had a better offer (actually, family stuff, but you know how it goes) so I have popped a pic of  our lovely Marlene into a collage for you all.

Second Choice was Sue for 'Baltimore Revisited', another amazing quilt,

Third Choice was Pat for 'Beyond Art Deco Glass'

Now here is some very exciting news, Pat just couldn't stop smiling, she had just got the news that 'Beyond Art Deco Glass' had passed the first selection process for her quilt in the judging of the Yokohama International Quilt Festival, next step, sending her baby off to Yokohama for the final judging.
Congratulations Pat, we are all very proud of you and wish you and 'Beyond...' all the best and hopefully the news of a win in October.

Part of our Quilt Show is the Lyn Ballinger Challenge, which is Judged twice, once by a Judge at our Luncheon (Judged 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, with gift voucher prizes)  and once by the visitors to our Quilt Show (Viewers Choice Award - the winner to receive the Lyn Ballinger Perpetual Trophy of a Quilt Stand).

This year the challenge was to use all of a 5" square of fabric in the creation of a place mat and there were some truly innovative place mats created.

This year we were honoured to have the lovely Kim from Kimz Sewing and Patchwork as Judge for the Challenge

1st Prize was Jackie, 2nd Prize was Sue and Lyn was in 3rd Place, all girls received gift vouchers donated by Kim to spend in her store.

Viewers Choice winner was Sue with this inspired creation of a waterfall.

As you can see, Sue was rather tickled to receive her Certificate from Sheila and a gift voucher from Penny.

Penny and Kim were the store vendors at the Show and had a delicious array of goodies to whet the appetite and get the creative juices flowing.
We are truly lucky here on the Sunshine Coast to have the support of both Penny and Kim and their wonderful Patchwork stores of Kimz  and  the Angel to sate our stash building desires. Both stores have the most helpful staff and nothing is ever too much trouble, all girls are happy to help with information and guidance, and of course both stores have the most amazing selection of classes and tutors available to help us all grow as Patchworkers.

Thank you  Kim and Penny for being so involved with our Quilt Show, for your generosity, your support and of course the yummy vouchers.

After such a successful Quilt Show you would be forgiven for thinking the gals were sitting back and taking a well deserved breather, but no, the buzz and the ideas were flying thick and fast at Wednesdays meeting, look what I spied sitting on the table, the cutest little tin full of the cutest little hexies and hexies to be.
yep, Marcia has been bitten by the tinsie hexie bug,

she tells that it will be a little, emphasis on little, wall hanging, ......we shall see.

New member Deanne was busily working on a pin cushion with a difference, rooster on an old cotton reel, just look at that tail!
Deanne was a little shy to have her pic taken, her hair is just growing out from a  cancer support shave.  Gotta take your hat off to all those with the conviction and courage to loose all their hair in support of cancer sufferers.

Thursday night - silk ribbon roses

A busy night for some on  Thursday - a silk ribbon needle case workshop was on the go....

Helen has some EPP on the go - carried around in the prettiest little beaded bag.

There was a man amongst us - doing some brain exercises - trying to blog the noise out, I am sure!!

I recognise some GTASB blocks in Helen's little quilt.

2013 Quilt Show - Part 15

'Buderim Blooms'
Created by Estelle
Made from a pattern called Candy Girl by Janelle Wind. I adapted the pattern and have made 2 smaller quilts that I have made from the same design that I have given to children of some friends. It lives on the guest bed at my house.

A Beautiful Jacket, perfect for a night on the town, but sadly I don't know who created this stunner, so keep your eyes peeled - you just don't know who you may see wearing this at some exotic location.

Heath's Quilt
Created by Pat

This single bed quilt was made for my third son Heath in 1985. Various scraps were used to produce the kaleidoscope pattern which was hand pieced then hand quilted. Calico was used throughout the quilt and for the backing.Hand made by me.

 'Love Bird Lane'
Created by Judith
I made Love Bird Lane in 2010 as a sample for the Patchwork Angel. It is a Quilt Company Pattern. I loved the colours in this quilt & the fact that the quilt incorporated patchwork, appliqué & embroidery, all the things I love to do. The quilt was professionally quilted by Quilting Fairy.

'Roos Abound'
Created by Marie

This quilt is a kit that I purchased at Kimz Sewing Center.  It was a great way to use a Jelly Roll

I quilted it on my domestic sewing machine.

'Circular Thoughts'
Created by Pat

Started as a tutorial with Lessa Siegele called “Pieces of Pie”and with the help and encouragement of friends
at The Craft Cottage I rearranged circles and half circles to produce this very large

wall quilt. Some interesting circular patterned cloth for the circles to sit on and

some circular quilting patterns sewn on my domestic sewing machine and Circular Thoughts was created

 'Tiffany Diamonds'
Created by Fiona

This is a traditional pattern, which is the kind of quilts I like to make. Tiffany Diamonds is part of a class I teach based on the 60 degree Triangle. Tiffany Diamonds is machine pieced and machine quilted by me, Fiona, Quilting Fairy

This is the final post of all the fabulous quilts presented by the Buderim Patchwork Group, I hope you have enjoyed following along and will continue to enjoy and be inspired by all of these lovlies.

It's time to call it a day, too many miss strikes on the keys, tomorrow I will let you know who all the winners were.......of course if you were at the Show on Sunday you already know....

2013 Quilt Show - Part 14

'Geisha Girls Dressed'
Created by Val

Project took a few months to complete and some years to collect fabric and to

decide the best method. The first geisha was done by machine but found that it was

easier to needleturn by hand.

I like this easy design and especially like the leaf and bee fabric.
Machine pieced, quilted by Judy at Furball farm.

Calico farm Designs. Hand embroidered, machine pieced. Made in the nevereending hope of girls in my family.
Now up for sale.

'Blue and Green Should be Seen'
Created by Sue A.

This is my version of quilt as you go; machine quilted, the blocks were stitched

together by hand

'Citrus'
Created by Marguerite

My stash just has to be diminishing - I am trying! The colours in this quilt are

indicative of our beautiful citrus fruits and a certain young girl tells me they are her
favourite colours, so it has found a home. Quilted for me by Carmel Brown

'Stars Across the World'
Created by Helen

My 'Star Journey' began as a small paper pieced series of stars for a cot quilt -
simple and light to carry on our first visit to Japan 5 years ago
The quilt taught me that persistence pays and to concentrate on one small job at a time, rather than try to complete a whole project as quickly as possible.

'Learning Blox'
Created by Denise

Blox First attempt at patchwork and quilting executed at Townsville in 1999 using quilt

as you go method. Our two boys are portrayed in the pursuits of their youth which
are still with them to this day, namely fishing for fish and looking for flowers
